This is still mixed primarily for louder volumes, but I've gone back over it to brighten it up for lower volumes too. There are also a few elements added and a few subtracted. This is the shortest heavy tune that I have right now and I'm probably going to send it to a local radio station for their local/indie show....they play a lot of heavier stuff.
So let me know what sucks about it, and what should maybe be emphasized. The usual....

I kinda hate mixing a tune like this in with all the pretty Xmas stuff everyone's putting out for us, but maybe I'll try and do a xmas tune too... :)
 
I cant listen till I get home from "work" tonight, but I'm looking forward to this one. Maybe instead of me I'll let my girlfriend post her review! She really dug the first mix of this song. All the lyrics are the same right? Heh heh heh.

better than version 1! I love the new guitar additives.. sounds like you resang some parts and removed the pichshifting.. fading back in at 4:05 is great too.. is that your woman now?

I just finished singing that new tune and my ears are shot.. The mix seems to be excellent though.. I'll listen again tomorrow when my ears are fresh and tell you what I hear.. I'm sure I'll have the same comments.. I still have version 1..

great everything on this one.. maybe I could complain about the drums, but I wont..

wow................I can't say I remember the first one....but this is great. You're one of the players whose style I can recognize and I mean that as a high compliment. I think one of the hardest things to do is acheive a personal, distinctive style and you've got one. Your harmonies in particular always stand out to me....very creative.
I also like the 'big' thick sound you have in the rhythm section. I wouldn't mind if you turn the vox up just a very teeny tiny bit.

Damn, this is great. It's pretty rare that I have absolutely no complaints, but this one sounds done to me. Awesome combination of different sounds that all comes together perfect.

I remember version one... this one's better... nice mix. I dig your fingerpicked acoustic sound at the beginning (and throughout)... very crisp.

Thanks a bunch guys for the help guys! There also are a couple of songs I did before that I might completely re-record soon for a cd in the next couple months. So your help is well....very helpful.
I'll consider this done until I hear otherwise...

mbuster - glad she likes it. What's weird about this song is that it sounds like it's got testosterone spilling out over the sides, but it's really about women getting the strength to stand up for themselves when they have to. This one is kind of a bad memory about some old friends from another state and another time...

jmarcomb - Thanks Jeff! Ya I stumbled on that patch not really klnowing what I was looking for. I knew the dynamics I was seeking but not the sound. You'll have to write some nice easy listening music for me again soon...keeps me in touch with things I need to be kept in touch with...

B.SABBATH - Sam, I appreciate you always being there. You're one of the few guys here who does adventurous heavy music....and since it's a major part of my "otal package" I'm not sure I would have ever posted this sort of thing on this board without you clearing a path for it. Does that make sense? It's early, but I guess I mean to say, you've set one hell of a standard around here for hard rock!
That's still my voice, not hers, unchanged. The question is....do you find my lady voice sexy? Cuz I could make you a whole album... ;) Oh and if you have a specific suggestion about the drums that I can do something about I'll be glad to hear it!

Lt Bob - I only hope I don't cross that line between definitive style, and repetition. Thanks as always Steve.

Excellent job! Creative song, great recording, very nice blend of instruments.
I'm a new guy here, so hopefully you will welcome my highly opinionated and picky comments. I only make them because you've done such a good job with this.

First - something weird happens at about 1:04. It feels like I'm being sucked into a vaccuum. Maybe it can be fixed with panning. Another dirty guitar panned center that comes in in unison with the first dirty guitar? All the other transistions btw clean and dirty are perfect - this one had a little quirk.

Second - something strange happens with the synth at 1:44. You are obviously very detail oriented, so I'm guessing this is on purpose. But it sounds a little off to me.

Last - here my "anti-synth" prejudices come out. You are obviously an excellent guitarist. Have you considered replacing the synth parts with guitar? You have the ability, and in my opinion it would improve the overall sound.

Again, excellent work. Great forum here. I'm going to check out more stuff.
 
Great stuff. The only Tool CD I own comes to mind.

The rhythm section is nice and "punchy" (no pun intended...)

I would have wanted those quiet guitar embellishments a la King Crimson to be a little louder and likewise the vocals.

Otherwise- great job!

If I'm driving and a SluiCe song should be broadcast, I'll know who it is! Thats something I can't say for about 95% of the faceless music that gets played these days. I consider style and "signature" to be valuable aspects of music. One of the things I liked about the 60's and 70's was you knew who the vocalists and bands were. No mistaking Hendrix, Joplin, Dylan, Steve Winwood, etc. Well, you've got a signature of your own and thats good--very good.

There were a couple things in the mix I would have done differently, but since I don't do this kind of stuff, I'd probably just screw it up. Anyway, I'd bring the drums up some and put 'em in a room where they crack a bit more. You rode the electrics--good. I thought when they were loud, maybe a little less loud would be better. And the whispering talking section at the end needs to come up for intelligibility. I followed it about 3/4 of the way, then the voice was too buried. Remember, its clear to you because you know what you're saying--but its all new to us.

I loved that electric to acoustic transition at the top. I loved the lyrics--another one of your strengths. I can tell there is a lot of thinking behind the words, and you don't beat me over the head with the point--you keep it subtle--make us think and work a little too. Thats when music is worth listening to. Overall, the mix sounds very good, so my mix comments are all just personal preferences. Its just hitting me how many visuals I got from the lyrics--cinematic, SuiCester!

Its a good thing I don't dance, cause I'd break a tibia or something if I tried it to this one!:D But I still give it a 98% for sheer originality and artistry...

Wow, Chris (he said talking to himself), that's a really provocative post title you have there.

I like tool, and I can hear some quasi-similarities, but I'd never confuse you with tool, b/c you're not a tool...in fact, you're down-right genius-ish sometimes. Thanks for re-posting this one...b/c I get it. Makes me feel smarter. I'd still take Chrysalis as a B side when you drop this off, btw.

Listening to your music, it's obvious to me that you have a pretty broad base of influences, as I'm sure most music-lovers do.

I tried to compare this to the original, but the original's on another hard drive that's being kinda' pissy right now, so I can't compare the 2. The problem is that your tunes are so good when you originally post them, that most of the "changes" are more like fine tuning than what I do with a repost (which is usually more like..."okay, after much careful consideration and help from this BBS, I redid 100% of the parts, took all the guitars out, added a jaw harp and drums, and rewrote the lyrics...LEMME' HEAR YA'!").

Anyway, I wish you a ton of luck and fun with this (and I'm gonna' PM you about TW).

You're right...I can do better....thanks for the suggestion! As for the synth at 1:44, it may get replaced with another idea at some point, but for now it doesn't sound "off" to me yet, though it may in a week or two....it may possibly need to be coupled with another element to be effective though too. So perhaps a bit more experimentation is called for...thanks again. Look forward to hearing some of your work!

gilwe - Thanks for the listen...compiled? Do you mean CD? hopefully early next year...I have a lot of stuff I plan to re-record, and I want to see what new things come as well. I don't feel matured enough to release a serious CD yet. Still getting the ideas down for now. But it would be cool to have one done. Would be nice to at least feel like a pro....;) Thanks again man!

hehe...I am always torn between my love for the city, and my love for all-things-not-city. I've lived in Florida, Long Island NY, New Jersey, and Maine....I feel about as schizophrenic as they come sometimes. :D
But I look at it this way...A guy in California played bass on one of my songs without either of us leaving our houses.


Crawdad - Man, reading your responses to peoples' posts really impresses me a lot of the time. You listen for a lot of different things, and you do it with your ears wide open. Thank you for your comments. I would like very much to do a bluesy guitar ride for you sometime. :)

chris harris - You've got my vote for BBS Clown and Most Likely To Make Sluice Piss Himself Laughing 2002. I think one thing I share with Tool is we were all Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath fans on the Rock side of things. So thanks for giving me some separation there... It's starting to get a bit frustrating to be honest...Thanks for the good words Chris. And the humor! ;)

I`m not one of the mixPros so I don`t get into that too much. I did put it on my big system and it sounded like a damn good concert, really good. There`s a lot of stuff happening through the mix but it has a distinct groove to ride all the way through.
 
The only problem I have with this song as far as commercial viability is that is is too complex for the average listener. It doesn't have a long groove section or a catchy riff like a System of a Down song or Weezer song. Sounds like you have some maybe a Soundgardern influence??

I really like this song and it is very well produced/engineered. But I also like Rush and some progressive stuff that an average listener would't.

Only my 2.5 cents.

...just spent part of the day listening to Ænima... now I recognize that guitar sound you have... Marshall cab (not Tool), seemingly coming from the center (Tool)... (tho you've played the parts so tight, even when they're panned it sounds like they're coming from the center...) Didn't realize just how much of Ænima has the guits panned center.

Whoa... that little whacky guitar lead around 2:00 caught me off guard (listening while typing)... really cool... kind of makes it sound similar to "Feathers & Bones", again... your signature guitar style.

(Dammit... comments all over the place here :rolleyes: )

The synth at 2:40 was great.... Did that electric guitar build in volume during the speaking part, in the first mix? I like that.

I'm hearing a bit of compression ... on the reverb? Or something... (around 0:20... second listen...) maybe paranoia... but it's a slight "pumping"...

The reverb on the guitars (electrics) is perfect. Have you tried doing a tight doubling of your vox yet? It might work on certain phrases, here--give it that natural chorusing...

A great mix and listen the second time around. You'll kick all those local band radio show bastage's asses ;)

Now, about that "Buffalo Bill-put-the-fuckin-lotion-in-the-basket!" voice you took out at the beginning! :mad:
