OK, I read the thread about "who writes atheist based songs" and am a bit hesitant to ask, but...

would anyone be willing to review my song on GarageBand.com?

I have done lots of different music in the past. Decided to do a rock record and this is my first song.

Do you mean "Take My Life"?

It sounds pretty good. The bass tone is solid. Most of the voices come through pretty clearly.

There were a couple of background vocals throughout that got pretty buried. i.e. The yelling near the end of the breakdown (around 3:00 I think).

And since you brought it up...

Ok. That was painful to write.
Seriously though, I listen to a lot of Christian music. I think serious, anthemic songs like this tend to sound a little cheesy, but that's subject to interpretation.

I have a friend who does that stuff. A lot of kids like the strong lyrical songs. This was for a specific group. I just wanted to try something new.

I buried the BGV's in that spot on purpose so you could hear the guitar solo. The bass tone started out terrible. I used an active Traben bass and had 2 EQ the crap out of it and add hard compression and a BBE maximizer to tame it down.

I thought the music sounded good but the vocals kind of sucked. Sounded like it was done in 1 take. Keep trying, your record may go double myrrh one day...

I thought the vocals were pretty solid, at least the mixing of the vocals was pretty good. The performance could have been better but even there I thought it was almost solid. Maybe leave out the background vocals during the guitar solo and beef up that guitar tone a bunch. You say you have a maximizer, run the lead guitar through it. Well done song and mix.

Listening to this through my mixing monitors, the first thing which jumps out at me is the guitar sound. It sounds like you might have recorded a bit of the room with your electric guitars. They sound a bit boxy.

the vocals are a bit high in the mix, too.. With hard rock music like this, the vocals really need to be settled in the mix more. Use EQ (if you have to) to make them pop, instead of gain.

The bass really rocks. Love the fatness of it. Whatever you did to get that sound - it worked.

The canned drums sound pretty good. Could be a bit more prominent in the mix, though I don't necessarily think they should be louder. Not entirely sure what can be done about that. I don't have very much experience "tuning" canned drums.

Anyway... Pretty good tune. Keep at it. Thanks for sharing!

Heh... Nah... I believe that what goes around comes around... I need the good critiques as much as the next guy, and we're all just tryin' to get the sound right.

I enjoyed listening to the song (despite the theme!) . . . I liked the musical thinking that went into it. In particular I liked the vocal and harmony and the harmonies.

Others have commented on roomy sounding guitars (I didn't mind that sound), and maybe the vocals being a bit too upfront (they aren't). I thought the vocal delivery was okay as well. I expect you've used a fair bit of comnpression on the vocals, because my brain was expecting the shouty bits to hit me more than they did.

I wasn't too sure about the lead guitar . . . playing was fine, but it seemed to be a bit forlorn in the mix. A more aggressive placement and treatment of its sound might work.

Cool song . . . you've done well.

I'm not critical of lyrics so much so I wouldn't have noticed it if the others hadn't pointed it out The mix seems alright and I don't feel that the vocals are sitting too high in the mix... maybe somewhat high but not too much. The lead guitars need to pop out more though. If you try bumping up the lead guitar and tame the vocals ever so slightly it could be better.
