I know that the Rode NT1 needs phantom power to work but, will this setup work if i go from the mic to the compressor, compressor to mackie board?

youll want to go straight from the mic to the board and run that through the compressor.....

does that mean I will have to use a second mixer channel? So i will have 2 channels running with the mic?

Your Mackie has inserts. Read the manual for details!

im new to this i been working on a dj mixer for the longest. Dont have a manual. What are inserts?

I nearly died when I discovered what inserts are. They are so cool!

Insert jacks let you put outboard equiptment into the channel strip of your mixer. To do so, you'll need a special insert cable. Its got a stereo plug on one end and splits into 2 mono plugs on the other.

Plug your NT1 into, say, channel one. Then plug the stereo end of your insert cable into the insert jack on channel one. Plug the two mono jacks into the input and output of your compressor. Viola! Your signal will not be routed through the compressor on channel one.

If it doesn't work, by the way, switch the 2 plugs on the compressor around. I can never keep them straight. :D

Have fun!

Go to Mackie's web site and download their manual if you have misplaced yours. The Mackie manuals are so simple and self-explanatory. A real godsend for newbs and intermediates who aren't very tech-friendly.

Just a random observation: The Mackie manuals are also bloody hilarious... sounds like the kind of manuals I would write - i.e. suggestions for what to do with the cardboard box your mixer came in, etc. I love those guys!

Chris,
Thanks for your helpful explanation to Jamal.

Jamal,
Sorry for my quick response, glad you figured it out! The Mackie manual is pretty informative. I just picked up a 1202 VLZ Pro to use as my monitoring board. Have fun recording!
BTW - what compressor are you using? You should be using the RNC! :)

Yup! The Mackie manuals are laced with humor one would not expect to see from ANY company. Love that shit. :)
