I'm about to replace the Echo Darla in my DAW and was thinking of putting it into my old P266 and using it as a standalone Gigasampler box. It has 128Mb and I will also get a new big/fast hard drive.

Anybody else have a similar set-up? How well does it work?

Its a nice idea to get the giga off your sequencing/recording computer but Giga is extremely demanding. Less than 256 Ram and your pushing your luck. If you are doing those massive orchestral gigs than look out. I am running a PIII 750 with the fastest IDE drives. I increased my Ram to 512 and it really made a difference when running giga with Reaktor and cakewalk. Also the general functionality of giga has improved with latest update.
I'd put my money in ram before I bought another sound card and then figured the headache of synching the two computers together.

Hey Kennedy, thanks for the post - I thought this thread had died.

Just to clarify a little - I already decided to replace the soundcard in my DAW, which I have now done. Really I just wanted to make use of the spare machine and card. My DAW is and 833 with 512Mb memory, but you know if I can take some of the load off of it - every little helps!

sounds like your main DAW is a powerful machine. You should try out the old one for the hell of it and see what happens. I used to have a lot of resource issues with giga and other apps but it has gotten better over time. Perhaps my use has gotten a little more strategic in the way I record and mix. I had a drop out problem the other day when running cake giga reaktor maily due to complexity of the reaktor ensemble. Also over time I've begun to do the giga tracking first and then record it to audio so I don't have to run giga anymore. Your new soundcard I hope is multiclient because this has made things a lot easier for me. I never had much success with the capture to wav function in giga.
I do as little efx as possible and then I do it after I've combined tracks and have sorted out what efx with what track. final master is always one stereo track.
I wonder when giga is going to get happening with WDM?
I would advise that you post your giga problems at Northern Sound and Sonic Control giga message boards. There doesn't seem to be a lot of giga users on this one.
