I have not been able to figure out how to use the auto-punch feature on my VF-160. The manual does not make it clear. Can anyone give me step by step directions in plain straight forward English? I could probably figure it out through trial and error, but I don't seem to be able to find the time for that. I've already tried a couple times based on the manual's instructions, but have not been successful when I actually try to do it. A friend and I have been recording a lot of songs for the past few weeks, but it would be nice to have this feature figured out so we could save some time without wasting time making mistakes. Any help would be much appreciated.

I know how it works on my VF-08...the 160 is probably similar. Does the Autopunch button say something like "edit" below it?

Well, I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't look at my machine, but judging by the pictures of both units, it looks like the layout is significantly different, but maybe the procedure is somewhat similar in any case since they're both made by the same company. But I don't remember seeing an edit button per se near the auto-punch.

There are basically 4 steps:

1. Set your punch-in & punch-out points.

On the VF08 this is done by pressing shift-Autopunch (which activates the edit mode for autopunch). The screen has options for "Mark in" (marking the punch-in point) and "mark out" (punch-out). (Shift-F1 and Shift-F2) Since the default point is where the playback is currently, stop the player where you want to punch-in and do the shift-edit thing and "mark in". then do the same thing for the punch out point.

2. rewind the player to a point prior to the punch-in point.

3. Press the 'Auto punch' button - it will then be lit, which indicates that you're in auto punch mode.

4. press 'record' and 'play' like you would normally do to record. The playback will start, minus the track you're recording on and the 'record' button will flash. When it reaches the punch-in point, the 'record' button goes solid and you're recording. When you reach the punch-out point, it pops out of recording mode, although the playback continues.

The 160 is probably similar enough that even if the specifics are different, these concepts will at least help.

Thanks. I really appreciate your input. I'll let you know sometime in the next day or two whether it works that way on my machine, but your directions sound pretty straight forward. I'll try it.

On the VF160 this is how it works:
1. press 'hold'.
2. set the time for the punch in by the the Jogdial and the ffwrd/rewind keys.
3. press 'store' (message = 'hit any memory keys').
4. press 'auto punch in'
and then the same trick for the 'auto punch out' (all 4 steps! and in step 4 you of course press 'auto punch out').
Now both times are set, you can operate the recording (shift/record for the autopunch-mode and then play/record for the actual recording).
Good luck,
Gomp

Thanks Gomp, that sounds more like it for my machine. I'll give it a try tonight when I get home from work.

For under $30, you cannot afford not to have one. The 8051 Footswitch makes punches painless. Just arm the tracks, press play, step on it when the time comes and step on it again when you are done. Too easy.

I couldn't agree more. For a while I wasn't sure about getting one. Now I can't imagine being without one. Makes life easy and works perfectly.
