Will ProTools work without having a Digidesign device?

Yes.

ProTools software is really just another brand of non-linear editor software just like Cubase, Sonar, Cakewalk, etc. As such, it works by mouse and keyboard alone in the same manner. The Digidesign I/O and control surfaces just make the job easier.

But without a Digidesign hardware device, you won't be able to run any inputs or outputs. I am not sure whether it scans for devices at startup and will open if it does not see a Digidesign approved piece of hardware. Pro Tools Mpowered will run with apporved Maudio devices as well.

Yes, I got a message that says "Digidesign Interface not found"

NOPE, thats why cracked PT S/W is nonexistent...or is it....hmmmmm

Yeah, I suppose I should have qualified that a bit better.

ProTools will still work as an editor w/o having to have Digi I/O, though, won't it? E.g if you hot swap a data drive from another procect or studio or if you record your WAV tracks in another environment you can still import them into PT and use them w/o Digi hardware, can't you?

Or am I totally wrong there?

ProTools LE is designed to work only with Digidesign hardware. If your version works without it, you have an illegally cracked version. There is a new version of PT (ProTools M-Powered) that works with many M-Audio interfaces. The ProTools HD/TDM systems are too expensive to even discuss. :D

Clarification, please...

Scrubs,

I have not used PT in a couple of years, so I'm behind the curve. Could you clarify; are you saying thet PT will not even *run* w/o Digi I/O, or just that you cannot use PT to record and ouput w/o Digi I/O?

I was of the impression it would still run as an editor w/o the hardware, but I could be wrong about that. Could you set me stright? :o

scrubs is right
you CANNOT run pro tools without the hardware attached to the computer. period. has been this way for years. i have never even seen a cracked version of the program anywhere probably because it's too hard or maybe even impossible to fool the software into thinking there is a physical hardware device attached. I don't know, i'm not a computer programmer.

For a while there was a very limited version that was released called Pro Tools free that would work with any soundcard. However, even if you could open it, why? If you can't hear what you are doing, what is the point?

If I'm not mistaken, PT free would only work with Windows 98 on PC (unsure which Mac OS it is compatible with).

I could be wrong about PTLE (I don't own it), but I am pretty sure it requires the digi hardware to be connected to even function. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. That e-bay link I posted above is almost surely a cracked version because the seller specifically states that it includes no box, hardware, or manual, but supposedly works fine.

no you're 100% right
the link you gave is a valid Pro Tools disc...however, if the buyer gets it and expects it to work without buying the hardware too, it won't. 6.7 is one of the latest releases Digi gave out to people and if you had 6.4 and the hardware already, you could buy that disc off ebay and use it to upgrade. although i'm surprised the seller doesn't mention that there is no hardware and it won't work without hardware....and that it's only a windows disc. from the looks of this thread, people not familliar with PT could be easily taken advantage of. and looking at the current top bidders previous sales...it looks like he runs a mac. :(

You cannot event load PT without a hardware device attached...

OK, guys, thanks for the correction; I was mistaken. Guitar08, ignore everything I have said in this thread.

And I thought Steinberg was anal with their dongles...

I'm not convinced. He also has Cubase SX listed with no dongle and claims it works perfectly (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41786&item=7327751573&rd=1). This exact same ad appeared under a different user name last week (and other one ended earlier today) and the user feedback (from a buyer) under that user name said it was pirated software. I would guess it's the same guy and he just keeps creating new user names. I would be wary to buy any software on e-bay that didn't come with the box and manual and, if necessary, the proper dongle.

Pro-tools LE will not run without Digidesign hardware. Protools free will work with any soundcard or interface but only works on the PC or Mac. Not sure which one but not both.

Pro-tools M Powered is the new one that runs with all of the m-audio interfaces which makes it very affordable. Even Protools LE with the Digidesign MBox is affordable at like $600 or something.

You cannot buy Pro-tools without the hardware.

yeah, i think you're right. after i posted i looked over it some more and it seemed really sketchy. i actually e-mailed the bidder who had already bid 76 bucks on the auction and warned him. it's ridiculous that people take advantage of other people who are new to the recording world. now who knows...maybe both of the software is legit and he's just not including the dongle or the hardware with either one....but either way, it's still pretty shadey.

The mac version of protools free only works up to OS9 no OSX support.
