will plug-in's make rack gear obsolete?

That future is here. Can anyone say Kurzweil KSP8 with mLan? How about Waldorf AFB-16? In the case of the Kurzweil you can even use it as your audio interface. And the Waldorf can be used just like a VST plugin. Both are brilliant products. Both put 0% load on the host CPU. Both sound great.

Blah, instead of arguing which is best, we should concentrate our efforts on figuring out how to make replicators a la Star Trek :p
 
program data will replacate any audio sound in the near future, imho, we are of the machine indeed, that's pretty cool in itself...

what they try and do in other fields has me worried...
