Hi guys,

Was just wondering guys, I'm looking at getting a m-audio firewire solo but the problem is that the firewire solo doesnt have midi.....

Stupid question..... if i buy a M-audio uno usb midi interface am i going experience any latency if i use vst instruments with a midi controller that runs str8 into my laptop...

Thanks for any info you can provide me.

Generally in midi you wont get any latency, the data processed is very less in a midi set up. If you get a latency in midi it is generally a driver problem. You just have to worry about audio latency which undergoes a whole lot of processsing in your computer and audio interface.

There won't be much MIDI latency, but the latency generated by the audio buffer will also generate latency on the output of your VST instrument. In other words, the VST instrument will get the command to sound a note almost immediately after you press the key, but it will take the VST instrument x amount of samples to actually generate the sound depending on the size of your buffer.

So do you believe with the equipment i have listed i should be ok

M-Audio Firewire Solo
M-Audio Uno midi converter

Thanks

I guess it depends on your software, but I don't see why not. I was running an Mbox with ProtoolsLE and since the Mbox didn't have MIDI, I had to use a Yamaha 1x1 USB interface and it worked just fine.

Well the laptop setup i have is Cetrino 1.6 with 512mb of ram

The software i will be using will most likely be Acid, reason and Cubase along with VST instruments like battery and absynth.

If anyone has any experience with this software in a similar kind of set up i would to here of your experiences.

thanks again for all that have posted it has really helped
