Will Cicadas Prevent Us From Recording?

I'm in New York and the Cicadas haven't come out yet but I'm scared. Has anyone had any experiences with Cicadas and tracking? I'm especially scared about acoustic instruments and vocals.

I regularly have cicada issues... I just don't record acoustics and vocals when they're going. But ours might be nicer than yours, typically they only buzz for an hour in the evening when it's getting dark. If you can hear them inside your recording space, then yes, they'll be a problem - especially as it's a constant noise.

You might just have to schedule your recording around them... you'll be fine for doing noisy stuff when they're going but you'll need to find other times for quiet things, I'd imagine.

This is the year of the 17 year Cicada brood.
The East coast of the US will witness no fewer than one trillion of this species this summer.

17 years ago folks claimed not to be able to hear an aircraft pass over head while all of those Cicadas were singing there *lets have sex/lay eggs/then die* song.

Just record the Cicada this summer for future sampling projects.

They'll have to be pretty loud to drown out those stupid-ass motorcyclists with no mufflers! Walking my dog last night I was almost deafened by a pack of them. Then later - when tracking vocals - I had to delete one track as a loud one roared past 3/4 of the way through the track. Luckily I was just doing a bridge passage, so only a minute long. Even with all the windows closed, I could feel the engine.

No, but I do noise gate them to get rid of the airplanes and what not from the BG.

Trouble is, here in sub tropical Queensland, the cicadas can go to 12 and, at least in my garden, tend to accompanied by a frog and toad bass line!

used to see em when I lived in Philly....

you can tie em' on a leash of thread and watch em fly in circles...

and they leave their exoskeletons on all the trees when they come up out of the ground....

You should write a song using the cicadas as the main feature, those cicadas always reminded me of the sound effects from the original 'War of the Worlds' from the early 1950's. Whenever the Martian crafts were featured
it was like freekin' cicada city!!
