JR - the room I use is pretty sound-absorbent, not a lot of reflections, and the two mics on the guitar are in close. And yeah, I have to crank the pres as well to get a decent level.
Slack - you're right about the first sung note. I listened to it through a CD player last night and thought 'nah, redo the vocal - the first note at least has to be right'. Thanks for confirmation.
Lt Bob - see comment to Slack. Also, I used Fruity Loops for the beats, and everything I used on this one came with Fruity. I've started buying soundfont samples to get better sounds than Fruity's got - drums is next on the list.
Toad - thanks - maybe the best way to classify it is 'no class'
B Sabbath - "anything I complain about would probably be preference.. " It's a relief to hear you say that. This mix was a struggle for me.
barometer - Cheers. If this one's okay, it frees me up to get to work on some other stuff.
Sluice - the guitars were the problem. How to make it so that each one stood out? No problem at the beginning, and I think there's enough separation when the second one comes in (panning and a bit of radical EQ), but the solo guitar bits at the end are difficult. When I put the solo out on the right, the first guitar tended to disappear. When I put it out on the left, the first guitar didn't disappear as much, but it still fades into the background a bit. Normal, I guess, considering how busy the mix is at the end, but I still wish I could keep that first guitar more present in the mix. Maybe some more EQ, or a different reverb. I hate tweaking and bending the shit out of a sound I tried so hard to get right when I recorded it. The price of a complex mix, I guess.
Joe - LOL - thanks - that's the first time my stuff's sounded Brazilian to anyone.
