similar thread here...anyone have any info on how this album was recorded?

Sure sounds like a basement recording to me, in a way...

I mean, using nice gear and all...but, it isn't perfect.

Any info would be great, thanks.

ok, this is all I found so far..

http://www.dailynorthwestern.com/daily/issues/2002/05/02/nyou/n-wilco.shtml

in there it says:
Q: Can I ask about (former Wilco member) Jay Bennett and what it's like to not play with him after having made this record with him?

A:Well his role in the making of the record was more from a production standpoint than anything else. Well, not production — excuse me — engineering. He kind of spearheaded the buying of recording gear and everything like that, and once we got into it, he did collaborate — although in a small way — to the songwriting. I think he really kind of removed himself from the band in a certain way. I think in his own words, he "put his engineer's hat on."

so, seems to me like maybe I was right...they got their own recording gear and did this thing a lot on their own..(it mentions in there someone else who helped them in the mixing stages)..

Gotta find out what kinda gear they used, they got a great sound on that record.

Haven't heard the CD yet, but I will be seeing them live here in Dublin tommorrow night.... Won concert tickets and the new CD from an Irish Radio Station phone-in quiz thingy. Hopefully, they'll be in my mailbox when I arrive home from work as it'll give me a chance to hear the songs before tommorrow night.

I'll let you know how the gig went.

cool, look forward to hearing about it.

"Jesus Etc." if the one I am playing a lot right now.

Almost I've heard from Uncle Tupelo & Wilco over the years has that "near low-fi" quality to it, with maybe the exception of "Still Feel Gone" which as I remember was pretty slick sounding - Don't have a copy anymore. Wish I did.

I read that the guys recorded one of the albums on an 8-track in a barn/warehouse style space -

I also read that at UT was always pretty damn broke, so had to record cheaply -

Dunno, but would like to find out how and where Wilco's latest was recorded - might would surprise some of us amatuers. :D

I'm kinda diggin' "Kamera" and "Heavy Metal Drummer" right now.

I'm a huge Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/SonVolt/Jeff tweedy/Jay Farrar fan.

jitteringjim, you said you wish you still had a copy of Still Feel Gone. The Early UT albums were just re-released - No Depression, Still Feel Gone and March 16-20, from what I hear they were remixed/remeastered and they sound great.

That whole Alt-Country, Cowpunk, or wahtever it's called these days scene is excellent. I encourage anybody who is not familiar with these bands to check them out. The new Wilco is still growing on me, but I love it so far. Also check out Jay Farrar's (the other half of Uncle Tupelo) new one - Sebastopol. It's excellent.
