C. I also have a broken Ensoniq ESQ-1, won't boot when I turn it on. I've read that it is probably a power supply issue due to aging capacitors breaking down. Is it worth repairing...anyone feel free to answer.

Check out Rainer Buchty's site-he has a ton of info on the SQ80 and the ESQ1 including schematics and manuals for them. He also has an Ensoniq forum with lots of helpful people there-I bet you can get help there!
http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/

There is also a man in California that can repair them-he got my SQ80 up and running a few years back-I'll have to track his name down if you are interested in contacting him.

...oh boy can I relate.....
In my teens, I wanted a reel-to-reel. A Teac 3340. Never got it. Had a 1960es Aiwa 4-tracker that was broken most of the time.

Through the next two and a half decades, I still wanted a reel-to-reel. A Tascam, 4 or 8-track. Didn't get it.
At that time, I also really wanted to start playing piano again, but no room or money for a piano either.
I had also gotten married and she was less than understanding about such needs....

In 2001, I got an 8-track digital recorder and a Yamaha P80 piano, and life was good (for a while). Because I wanted more tracks, for drums, guitar and such...so I got a Tascam 2488.

We split in 2005 (But, she's now threatening to come back despite it all   )

But when I moved in alone....that's when the badness started.....I went crazy on EBay. Overdue items, indeed:

A Studer 807 2-track 1/4-inch deck (high-speed model.)
A Neumann USM 69 stereo mic.
A Neumann M147 tube condenser.
A set of Neumann 184 small condensers.
A 4-pack of Sytek pre-amps.
Cables galore from Redco.
K&M stands.

Oh, and I didn't mention that I liked the idea of having a 16mm film projector, to complement my Super-8 model, did I. I now have 7 film projectors altogether...
in addition to the antique cameras....

And I live in an efficiency.

But I still 'need' another reel-to-reel; you know, just for 'hi-fi' use....

I suppose it will only end when stuff starts falling off my balcony, or I can no longer open the front door.

Best,
C.

This is one hell of a thread

I am pretty good, I have a very small setup and use it extremely well. My money is in my megabucks violin. That said, I have purchased some monitors and a keyboard in the last few months, and I feel the store calling me back ;) I dont need real fancy stuff, but since I have low level stuff by Yamaha, Roland and Alesis, I think it would be unfair to the Korg corporation if I didnt have one of their products too. :D

I am thinking of an X50, MicroX or TR61. Anybody have any of these? The MicroX might be kinda fun, and I dont have a ton of space... ;)

I Joined just to comment on this Thread

I finally have found like minded gentlemen. For me I suffer 'Pedal Envy' it all started with a with a Boss Blues driver. Then I did a compression unit and I said to I wont get addicted, but in no time at all I was onto modulation. I did a chorus, flanger and a phaser all in one go and I didn't even know the difference between a flanger and a phaser!
By the time I got the Boss DD I knew I was a goner! Next I was back to distortion, my wife could see through the lies - 'trying to sculpture your sound are you? Need an ST808, a Double Muff and a Turbo Distortion do you?' she would question in disdainful tones. My marriage was already on the rocks when I started doing analogue pedals and Loop stations, suddenly Boss could not feed my habit - Tech 21, Digiman, Line 6 then the big one Electro Harmonic. I did 'cold turkey' and tried to build my own - but my clumsy soldering couldn't compete with the sweetness of professional equipment and I nearly burnt the house down.
I tried EPA (Effects Pedals anonymous) but it was just a front for a Dancelectric dealership and I ended up with a talk box and psycho flanger. Then it dawned on me, the moment of epiphany - How to appease my long suffering wife (apart from reciprocal purchases - we have a 500HK$/65U$ no tell necessary purchase ceiling).
To put it simply - it is cheaper than Golf and I'm not away all weekend playing, I'm just in the spare room. It is all about making your partner believe that they are better off with you than with someone else - who has a more espensive and/or time away from home/family hobby.
PS My wife loves every song I've ever written for her, as it is important to maintain delusions in every long lasting relationship - 18 yrs and counting!

GUYS GUYS GUYS! Your so right. MANY MANY of you suffer from G.A.S.

to Whomever replied about wife buying multiple color shoes, Here is the answer for that.

My wife is hot, but cheap/frugal, call it what you want. If it was up to her, we would eat ramens and $.50 hotdogs just to save a buck. She could eat for probably $10.00 a week if she was single. She only uses about half the package of seasoning in a package of ramens, and saves the rest of it in a jar. She uses it for seasoning in other food !!! OMG

She breaks up a package of spaghetti and saves the other half for a later date.

She only wears lipgloss/lipstick. Grant, shes pretty and can get away from needing 5 pounds of makeup. So I dont bitch too much on makeup. Shoes? She only has a pair of heels in each color. So brown, black, white, blue, black, red. So I cant bitch about redundant shoes. Plus she wears them for a few years.

She will go to a place and say get a sandwich that you build yourself. She makes a sandwich, then gets a BUNCH of lettuce, pickles, tomato and onion and get this, SHE WILL MAKE A SALAD OUT OF IT !!!! OMG !!!

CHEAP I SAY, but she says shes frugal. Or get ketchup packets and refill our bottle at home.

Shes a Hottie so I dont bitch back too much.

http://myspace.com/*******

Yes, she has some hot friends that I'd like to..... LOL

Word from the wise... she's going to find your entry here when she google's her myspace addy... (I thoughtfully left out her name from the addy :D)

Relating to the thread, I'm also a resourceful gear slut, but a slut nonetheless. I am glad that I never got into keys, though... Just guitar/bass/drums/live PA/recording/etc.

Welcome to the forum! I hope your arrangement with your wife continues to work out. You're actually lucky that she even knows the names of your pedals. My gf doesn't care about anything I own (except what we sell on ebay), just looks at me sideways when I tell her I bought something else. She does enjoy my music, though, and I make enough that the typical purchase isn't ever bigger than a week's paycheck, so she doesn't say much.

My wife actually has a pretty logical way to look at it. When I gigged alot, I was away from home, out in bars (sometimes some pretty rough neighborhoods) and driving late at night with little sleep. She always worried until I was safe at home - and then she had to put up with all the second had smoke (the house would smell of smoke for 2 days after I'd come home). And I still bought gear (but more gigging gear than studio gear)

She'd rather have me safe at home in the studio - and if that means I have to buy studio gear - so be it.

Could this be the best thread ever?? It's certainly in the top 10 :D

As for me, I am a pro so if I truly need something I get it. At the same time, I likey my toys too. :D I am moving more towards producing and composing, so its kinda working out good that I just happen to need the very toys I WANT. ;)

We might all be better off if we were gay, we would have much cooler toys. :D

HA....... and HA!

I def see the point in the gay thing, now that I read your post a cpl of times to see what you meant! At first I was like "whats being gay got to do with it" then it clicked. OH..... GAY! NO women to NAG YOU !

I also took it in the respect of most gay men are RICH $$ Well, the few that I've met are. Could easily buy most stuff in the Guitar Center with 1 years pay.

Why are gay men usually rich?

To whom ever replied about my wife finding this thread out on a search of her myspace, my wife is actually pretty cool. I showed her this thread and she is laughing er a$$ off at this.

I told her that she should join us on HR and reply to this thread herself.

In the meantime, she tells me that she is thinking of taking piano lessons.

GET THIS! Tonight she goes to the mail box to get the mail, and she gets a flyer in from the Guitar Center. Dig this. She shows me on the flyer the Akai MPD16 is on $ale for $99.99. I wanted this drum trigger pad for a while, but if I get the MV-8800, the MPD16 wont be needed.

I got the Guitar Center to give me a price on the MV-8800 for $1900.00. Thats prety darn good, actually.

PS, I showed her the MV-8800 and the thinks it's tight. She knows that I got the G.C. to give it to me for $1900 minus tradins.

Plus I need to buy a "Creation Station" from RTA. It's a nice desk/workatation. Check it out on:

http://www.studiorta.com/catalog/details.cfm?catalog_id=392

That desk is tight.

PS if I buy the MV-8800 (which has the mouse with it), I will set it up on its own mixing desk like this:

http://www.studiorta.com/catalog/details.cfm?catalog_id=395

Also available from RTA.

I am really trying to get to the point where I am about buying stuff that I need these days.

SHE KNOWS about the latency issue I am having with my Giga DAW. Actually she hears it and says "Yeah the timing seems off". So I dont thing I'll have to sway her to hard about buying the MV8800. She has watched all the videos on Youtube on the MV8800 and she says I should get it IF I can get id cheap.

I was thinking about a mpc2000xl, but I think I'm settled on the MV8800 now.

CRAP! She's gonna join HR !!! This HAS to be good !

Peace IM OUT (hopefully not for good!)

You're corrupting her. She's supposed to be helping you control your G.A.S. and you're turning her out to the bad side.

I am anppilot's wife. :)

If I weren't here to remind you (not nag), you would have ended up a gear junkie on a back street somewhere. Yes, he is this bad. He is lucky to have me.

He showed me this thread. It is very funny. However, he has exagerated on the cheapness. Who would eat spagetti sauce and ramens? Nasty!

In the meantime, she tells me that she is thinking of taking piano lessons.

Ok, I will admit I am jealous of his piano skills. I know I could never play by ear, so hopefully I can play by reading. I took orchestra in school so I could pick up on sheet music easily.

I told him I should tell the piano teacher after viewing his studio, "Yep, I think I am ready for my first lesson." That would be funny. Who has all that crap and does not know what to do with it.

See I think of you sometimes. I have chunked these flyers in the trash as I know he would be too tempted. Tempted by gear he did not know he needed until he saw it on sale.

The desk is cool. He really needs this item.

Good one, sweetie! I wonder if this statement will go the way of "My studio is set, I do not need to buy another thing for it." Remember that one from many moons ago?

CRAP! She's gonna join HR !!! This HAS to be good !

You can run, but you can't hide....

Yeah, she's a good sport. I tease her about her cheapness, but um...... it's true.

I have a neighbor he-she-it whatever you call them that was bitching about my bass from my Event 2020's. It's headboard is on the other side of my studio directly.

So as a nice guy, I switched our 2 bedrooms around so I could be away from it/her/him. Only thing on the other side of my wall now is nature. And I doubt birds will complain about bass.

The only ones who could complain about noise now would be the 2 guys that live upstairs from me. They just moved in. They lived in our complex, but on a 1st floor. They apparently arent used to "thumping/clodding" around and how BAD it sounds below.

So I'm waiting for them to complain about my noise then I'll throw back at them how they sound like elephants when they walk. I bet it "nulls out" real quick about my bass.

We were looking at the studio and how to set it up. This bedroom is bigger, 2 closets since its the main bedroom

Honey, if your reading this, thanks for letting me take over the master bedroom for the studio :D

But she knows that in the past, I've charged $25/hr for studio time. Not bad considering what I have. Not the best, but not crap either.

Hi FlyerGirl! Welcome to the forum. It looks like you found the thread after all :). A lot of guys here wish that they're significant others would take an active interest in their hobbie(s), so I'm sure you're appreciated for it. I'm teaching my gf how to play guitar and drums currently (she started on guitar but we realized after she sat down at the drums she should learn that, too :)). If you haven't tried all of the instruments in the house you should before you decide what lessons to take, so you have the most fun with it.

Having FlyerGirl sign on (and the great humor in her reply) is perhaps one of the coolest things I've seen on this site in the 5 plus years I've been a member!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's try golf...

Country Club Membership: $40K year
Playing elsewhere 1X month: $1K year
Clubs: $2K
Clothes: $1K
Golf Vacations: $10K

My figures may be way off, 'cause I don't play unless they're little windmills involved.
