I have put up with soundblaster live long enough, and now
see it's limitations.I mainly use acid 2.0,a yamaha rm1x,and cakewalk.I am looking at the roland studio pack and the motu 828.I have looked all over the web for user observations of both but not satisfied.OK, what i'm asking......which of these two is the better "sounding" card,I know all the specs on on both,I was needing you guys personal opinion after spending time with either. My search isn't limited to those two,but I can spend no more than $800 US.

hmmm...

depends on what you need the card for, what you wanna do etc...
otherwise it's hard to say...

i think i'll watch whats being said on this thread since i am also in the same boat using SBLive platinum 5.1 and was also looking at the MOTU stuff. but i was looking at the "musicians friend" catalog and from what i read and saw, the M Audio omni studio looks to be what i am looking for. it has mic pre-amps/phantom power , 6 in/ out to pci card, a desktop audio station (no more reaching behind the computer to plug in and out even though with SB Live platinum with the "live drive" i dont have to. and lots of extras.

thats the link to see it up close. the price at guitarcenter.com is $379 us dollars.
good luck

WHICH CARD?

I mainly record from drum machines, and the rm1x(yamaha) occasionally I will record guitar and bass phrases into acid for loopig.I use the fostex fd-4 as the link between the guitars, mics, and synth modules, and the sound blaster live card.I specialize in hip-hop,house,and d&b.Hope this was enough info,I'll keep checkin, thanks.

spacedye I was looking at the omni studio about a year ago,and it still seems to be a good deal, but I want something that I wont grow out of in a year, like I did with the fd-4.thank you for the suggestion, and any other replies are welcome :D

If you're going to be working with Cakewalk make sure that the card you buy has WDM drivers for low latency. Delta 1010 would be ideal set up for you which you can expand later with high end converters like Apogee. The Delta will cost you about $600, so that leaves you some cash to get a pair of monitors - if you don't have already. Motu's stuff is very nice too, but works better on Mac platform. The 829 unit was designed for portable use with laptops, so unless you're recording on the fly, you don't need it - plus you'll need a firewire port to use it. If you still what to go with Motu's stuff then I suggest take a look at 1224 unit - it has slightly better converters then Delta 1010, but doesn't work very well with Sonic Foundry's software - which is something to consider if you're using Acid Pro.

Thanks for the compatibility info, that was something I didn't think about.I liked the roland better because it came with it's own mixer, and last thing I need is another software mixer.Well guys thanks again and any other input is greatly appreciated. ;)
