Another advantage to hanging a mic is you wont get as much floor noise (tapping feet, rustling from movement etc...) or run as much of a chance of bumping a stand. It also removes some of the temptation to grab hold of the mic or stand. And yes I agree, it looks cooler, but it does intimidate some singers, especially if they are used to live gigs where they hold the mic.
