Why such a huge price difference between Mixers, and the M-audio Fast track pro?

I am going to try to take care of the sound around the microphone and in the room.

That said, I did purchase recording software, Adobe Audition. Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize my USB microphone. I contacted Adobe, and they said sometimes it just "does that". And it's a problem with the engine the software runs on. I am currently petitioning them for a refund.

That said, I am not really sure what are optimal compressor settings to dump some of the background noise. Especially software compression (as all I have read about is hardware).

What programs would you guys suggest for software compression and something that is a good all around audio program for not only music, but podcasts and vocal recording.

I should clarify what I said about using a compressor. Technically a noise gate is used to prevent background noise, but in many software programs the noise gate is a component of the compressor. My bad.

Using a gate will mute the noise when you're not speaking but it will still be there in the background when you do speak.

Regarding USB mics and Audition, there are a couple of things you can try.

First, in Windows go to your Device Manager, click on the USB port the mic is plugged into, go to the Drivers tab and the Update Driver via Web/Windows. This can fixt things sometimes.

Second, dowload Asio4all from HERE.

Once it's installed, go to Edit/Audio Hardware Setup and select Asio4All in the driver window instead of whatever is presently selected.

Select "Control Panel" in the driver options and, hopefully, you will be able to select "USB Audio Device" under the WDM Device List.

Once you've done this, you should (well, may) be able to select your mic in the default input device box of the Audition/Edit/Audio Hardware setup menu.

Good luck--but USB mics are the work of the devil!
