Why NOT to buy BEHRINGER products....add your woes

Also, as fun as it is for all you tag-alongs to make the claim that YOU somehow invented "jamfest", Dragon, drstawl, and I were the ORIGINAL jamfest! It happened on a boat, at the Pittsburg Yauht Club, I believe in the summer of 2000 (hazy memory). Might have been '99. I will ask drstawl.

So, enjoy the "jamfest" that I created. ;)

Don't be trying to score any free tickets Ed ... ... I'm already working him over for a bit of the ol' 'financial aid' for Jamfest myself!! :D :D

I notice now that the word Sonusman has been unblocked on the forum.

It's like so many things ... a new product comes along, the firmament rage against it and eventually a happy medium is reached. Give it about two more years and I think everyone will be a lot more philosophical about the whole cheap/Chinese equipment debate. So what if Ed has a slightly different opinion now to four or five years ago? We don't stay the same forever you know!! :)

There's actually a couple of debates rolled together here:
1. Behringer makes functional/unusable stuff at a great/revealingly low price, that for the money/time spent on the phone to their returns department is perfect/a false economy for users at all levels on a budget/people with no buying sense.

2. The slightly less exciting argument that that Behringer DI box is actually a very good box regardless of price. As Ed said to me the other day, "that box passes 20-20 better than most boxes". I happen to like that they're very flexible and chunkily built whilst being significantly cheaper than the BSS ones they're copied off (cosmetically at least). I've never really bothered to compare the sounds from each, or any of the various EMO, Leem, Samson, Sound Lab and other boxes I use ... mostly because none of them has ever caused me any problems in real-life use (and I'm certain my PA amps and horns, not to mention the rooms, cancel out any minor differences between them anyway!!).

I think that time will tell that the truth on the "cheap gear is amazing/terrible" debate is predictably somewhere near the middle. It'll take us a while to get there, but the same goes for cheap anything. There are a couple of £300 Ibanez guitars in my shop that sound and play better than any number of £1000+ Strats, Jacksons and Les Pauls we have around, with one or two excetions. For the price, most people can't justify something three times the price for their bedroom hobby ... if there's anything I've learned in this game it's that at some point, a hobby has to remain a hobby. Next time I have £1000 lying around, I'll be putting it towards replacing my car or paying off my student loans ... not blowing it on a hobby!!!

Meh. Happy New Year, guys. :)

I don't care WHAT you give me to record with, I am going to get a usable sound out of it!

Most modern gear is QUITE capable of producing very good sound. It really is. Most of you young dorks weren't around 15-20 ago when I was making a start. There wasn't SHIT in the "low end" of gear. Back then, you couldn't buy a compressor for under $1000 that sounded anywhere close to as good as a Behringer! You could touch a 24 channel mixing board that passed clean signal for under around $2000! (but usually more!)

That's why I always jump into these Behringer threads. I started homerecording in 1969! You couldn't buy any gear that was as good as Behringer unless you went up into thousands of dollars and this was 1969 dollars.
I had a Teac 3340AS and an echo unit and that was it. Now we can argue, perhaps, that the 3340 was a decent piece of gear but it actually had some severe limitations of it's own ....... in simulsync you didn't get a full freq response out of playback for instance.
I suppose that's why us old timers do get roused when people don't understand what a golden age we live in for recordists.

If you can't make a good recording with Behringer gear then you can't make a good recording ...... simple as that.

YES ...... better gear can mean better sound but like Ford says ...... I hear stuff recorded on good gear all the time that sounds like crap.
I am not making the argument that there is nothing better out there ..... I'm just saying that a good recordist learns how to get good results within the limitations of his equipment. And B-gear is not nearly as bad as people who have never lived in a time of very limited gear choices would have you believe.

Okay i need to ask a favour of at least one of the oldtimers here. I joined WAYYYYYYY back when. I am talking, when satan(can't remember how he spelled it) was an avid member, and Ed was a highly respected contributor to this site. Also, back then Dragon occassionally posted, and the only issue this BBS had was FT. Now I took a few years off of this site because i no longer was able to record for many reasons. Now that I can record again I enjoy reading this site on a daily basis. If someone could PM me and briefly let me know why sonusman has become a 4 letter word, i would appreciate it.

Him and Dragon fell out ... that's the top and bottom of it. Someone will fill you in on details, but that's what it comes down to. Ed has this way of pissing people off, y'know? :)

And the name you're grabbing for is S8-N ... he hasn't posted regularly in quite a while.

It's really cool that some of the posters have stayed the same since the last millenium. Helps keep a bit of community going! :)

It's the second weekend in August as far as I know ... I'm planning on going just as soon as I can be sure the finances are in place to do it. Maybe I could spend a couple of days in Noo Yoik and do a bit of shopping or something to make it a proper holiday of it! :)

Although I know this topic has gone off because of people reminiscing (Which isn't a bad thing, I feel by reading this thread I've gotten to know a couple people here without actually having any sort of conversation with them.) I'd like to post something of topic.

I have a small Behringer modeling amp that I believe has 15 watts, and was around $60.00 on Musicians Friend. I've had it for the better part of a year, and I think It's great! It has a bit of a bassy sound to it no matter what guitar I plug in to it, but for the price you can't really beat it. I got some money and now my big amp, the one I use for gigging (or will, rather, I'm not in a band that plays out right now) is a Fender Stage 1600.

I like my little Behringer amp. =)

And what's this jamfest? Does it involve jamming of the folk rock variety?
