Why Not the P4?

This is absolutely right. The P4 has much more power per GHz for digital audio than a PIII or AMD if the software is optimized. Without optimization it gives similar power per GHz as the PIII.

P4 software optimization can be as simple as recompiling, and it shouldn't take very long for companies to do this. But even more performance can be squeezed out buy updating the code with P4 enhanced design rules.

Intel has been aggressively slashing prices on the P4 in order to entice buyers in this very slow market. If you have the money to buy, definitely take advantage of it. The P4 is a much better choice in the long run.

Good info barefoot. I think Intel's pricing policy is really screwed up right now, I mean why charge the same for p4 1.5 gig as p3 866? Doesn't make sense. Why charge essentially the same for the Celereon 1.1 as the p4 1.4? The odd pricing makes p4 the "value chip" and not the Celeron at all..

Too bad I already bought the TUSL2-C and am too impatient to get recording to return it and go with a p4 compatible board...
 
you're better off with TRIED AND TRUE techknowledgy anyhoo. I never EVER buy the newest thing.. always the old, good shit.

well, I just put it in and here's the skinny:

My old board was running @ 83FSB, my processor @412, and I had half a gig of RAM...

NOW, my boards at an even 100FSB (ironically SLOWING my pci bus?? but in a good way, cuz PCI stuff dont like the o/c)... but all my access is faster THAT way,

and my processors at 800.
It looks good, boots faster, and with the minimal amount of testing ive done since I put it in tonight.. ..seems dope. ALTHOUGH!!! first thing I did was open everything at once and fuck around... usually that would lock er up.. and it did. I also had a slow shutdown once.. and I think I should do a clean OS install....but After the weekend Ill have more in-depth reviews, ...

oh.. the processor was $50, incidentally. and it even came with a fan.

Id definately kill if I ran CEP at full bore, Photoshop and this... but theyre both doing Batch processes right now. IN fact... after It got through the first couple boots... its looking pretty uncrashable. Im tryin.

BEFORE:

Copying a 5 minute file (48k, 16bit) would take aboot 15sec

NOW:

clocking in at 9.

Before:

I could run 15 tracks with no plugins clean... more than that and I start to overrun my buffers a little... things get a little choppy

now: I just hit 24 unique tracks at once.... and my buffer isn't even lagging at all. And I can even PROCESS a track WHILE PLAYING BACK 24 tracks with no problems. This is all without plugins, mind you. Will try to find the limit some other day. Must sleep.

Why buy a TUSL2-C motherboard if you aren't going to put a Tualatin into it? :)

There's a price difference between the P3 and P4, because the P3 is far more powerful per clock cycle, not to mention more overclockable (if you're into that kinda thing).
 
You can still buy the CUSL2. I think you're right that they aren't making any new ones, though. There's no point.
 
I guess the 1.2 celly is based on the tualatin (could that be any harder to spell?), but I don't want to wait long before I get a chip so I will probably end up with the 1.1....

I would have had it by now but my bank hit me with a hundred bucks in finance charges...Urg! The life of the poverty-stricken student.
 
Sorry, I meant stopped manufacturing the CUSL2. There's nothing wrong with that board so it's not like it's been taken off the shelves.
