Please pardon any blatant retardation... but this is the newbies forum... please don't shun me.

I've got the equipment. Why isn't it working?

What I have:
music creator 2003
shure SM57 mic
audiobuddy preamp
SiS 7012 Wave soundcard

Plug it all together-- I'll try to explain this, see if I'm doing something wrong here... the audiobuddy output is plugged into the soundcard mic jack and the mic itself is plugged into the audiobuddy mic input. I get nothing. Static.

What I want to do:
Record some songs - me, my acoustic guitar and I.
Put it on a CD
Send out to friends and family

I'm obviously doing something wrong, and it's probably really stupid like plugging a cable into the wrong place... So what's going on here? Does my soundcard suck ass? Did I burn something? I can't... take this... I'm ... so confuzzled.

Does your sound card have one or two input jacks? The preamp has a line level output and should not be fed to a mic input.

After you get the Audiobuddy into the LINE IN jack you need to make sure the soundcard input is enabled in Windows.

The Line In is often disabled for recording by default, so as C7sus suggested, the Windows mixer hold the answer.

However, it's a rather confusing little app the way they designed its user interface, so here's an well-written article about it from Cakewalk's website that should clarify any potential confusion:

The Saga Continues...

Gah. It's not working! It won't record, and even if it did my voice would be lost in the static.

I've got all the sound adjusted (windows mixer XP) and enabled accordingly, and initially I tried using the soundcard's "line in" jack but it didn't work, so I tried the mic anyhow... Regardless, it will stay there (line in) now because that's how it's -supposed- to work, right?

In any event, I was looking at the pre-amp and it occured to me that maybe I shouldn't plug my low impedance mic into the high impedance jack, so I have to remedy that (need a different cable). Perhaps that will fix the problem.

But I don't know if that's going to change the fact that my... OK, my terminology is limited and quite possibly incorrect, but it looks like my input level bounces up and down with static/feedback(?) as soon as I plug in anything mic/pre-amp related, no matter how I adjust the sound levels and whatnot. How is it picking up static and nothing else? Do I have a loop or something? My speakers are turned down way low. I've even tried unplugging them, though what I thought that might do, I don't know. It's all trial and error.

Anyhow, thanks for the help thus far. Got anymore suggestions? I feel pathetic and whiny, and I'm truly sorry about that.

Eeee!!! It's working!!!

Well, I absentmindedly fussed with the volume controls for a long time and it finally started working properly. Thanks for all your help!
