AS for the Led Zepplin comment, if you backtrack far enough through this post you'll find it.

Fine. I'll take your word for it instead of sifting through the post. Whoever made that statement needs to spend some time listening to actual metal, and maybe reading a Martin Popoff review or three (yeah.. I know music critics suck. But this guy knows more metal than probably anyone and puts things in great context, regardless if you agree with him or not)

AS for Metallica haveing sloppy slow drums, maybe slow but not sloppy.

Yeah I used the wrong term. In my opinion, he can't play slow in a contextual way. His drums are too loud. He uses the SAME drums for different pieces. There's no change-up to improve the music, and it gives the impression that he's just a dumb ape who only knows one style of playing, always making sure you know it's him by hitting the cymbal on the 2. And to me, when I hear him attempt to play in the groove, he can't lock it down.. He's probably got the tempo right, but it just doesn't groove right. Which I don't understand, because when Metallica would jump from high velocity to lock step groove (ala Whiplash, and Helpless--"Cannot squeeze the life of me") he nails it. Anyway, because his style isn't very flexible, then it gives the impression that the song is "sloppy", even though he's probably keeping the time ok..

Of course, half the members on this board probably disagree with everything I just said. To each his own.

Martin Popoff....BW&BK Reader?

Hey you mentioned Martin Popoff. My band Emotional Flatline will be reviewed in the February issue and our song Break is on the same months sampler. I hope we get a decent review or i am cancelling my subscription...hehehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess now that you commented a bit more on Lars style i can see more of where you are coming from. Later A-man

For christ sake everyone, go to the mp3 clinic and listen to Emotional Flatlines Newest song...Hateless Void.
People please excuse me for spamming everyone with my bands mp3s but it is in my nature to try and promote.

Who knows how Lars plays anymore? They spend weeks fixing every single drum hit he does in Pro Tools for every recording now.

As for nerd stuff...

50 points goes to the first person who can tell me what game this code is for and what it does:

"Up, Up, Down, Down, left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start"

Don't waste my time:) It is the infamous Konami Code that was made popular in the Game Contra for the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) it was rumored to work in some of the other Konami games, in fact I believe if you tried to imput it in Gradious, your ship would explode.

By the way that code gives you 30 extra lives in Contra.

No its a nerd joke, its from some old nintendo game made in japan, the translation was so bad it became kind of famous.I guess some sort of villan was declaring his conquest of the others territory and it came out "All your bass are belong to us!"

Ok so I missed the 50 points on the Konami Contra code. Did any of you play all the way through that piece of shit game 1942 on the NES only to have it say "CONGRADURATIONS"?

Actually... I totally agree with that...

Lars has zero groove/finesse... he knows how to do one thing... and one thing only... Play Really Fast.

If you take the tempo anywhere below 120, then he turns into "JoJo, the idiot Ape Drummer". :p Just listen to "Nothing Else Matters"... that whole song you could totally tell he was just dyin' to get that thing to speed up, so he could play a "junka junka junka" double bass-drum beat... :p He can't hit a hi-hat at anything other than "maximum velocity full-force", and wouldn't know how to play a ghost note on a snare if you put a gun to his head.

So... for what he usually does... (spastically fast speed-metal)... sure... he does it well. But anything other than that, and he can barely even hold the sticks. :p

LARS A SPEEDMETAL DRUMMER! HEHEHE

I think that Lars' double bass drumming is not very technical or impressive at all. His fast stuff is like super simple. I don't understand why everyone thinks his slow drumming is no good. Maybe he should have played a 32nd note drum beat in Nothing Else Matters, that would have suited the contect of the song well...oh wait he isn't that fast of a drummer. I love Lars and i think his playing suits the music well but i think he shines in the mid tempo area. And even that stuff isn't difficult to play. He is a good basic drummer, but like i said that is my personal opinion. I was watching L.S.B.A.P. (the new DVD) which is identical to the old set and Lars drum solo is cool, but as far as speed metal goes...he ain't shit. Said my peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess you can say that in some ways, Lars is an overated drummer. To play devil's advicate though, He did state that when writing the Black Album he wanted to take a more simplified approach to the drumms like Phil Rudd from AC/DC. I think he pulls it off pretty well with a lot of feeling (or was it Bob Rock's pruduction magic?) either way I challenge any drummer to pull off playing "Enter Sandman" or "Nothing Else Matters" and do it as well as Lars does.

Lars is musical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enter Sandman, and Nothing Else Matters are great songs. But eay as hell...well that is what my drummer tells me. He says Lars is one of the easiest drummers to emulate in heavy music... but on the other hand he says that his playing is very musical, accenting the music, not just playing a backbeat. I only say this because i can't play all of his stuff, but my drummer can so i value his opinion...plus he's the shit....he wouldn't lie. I think all of Lars drumbeats go good in all of his songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I think Lars is a whiney little bitch, that statement is so true.

To keep the guitar relation to the forum:

I'm also not a fan of Kirk's, but his solos usually fit the songs well.

James is a great rhythm player.

Metal is not dead...it's just that music majors aren't taking the "appreciation" course anymore and, now that techno-synths are affordable,...everyone thinks they too can make "music".

Get a PC, KORG Keyboard Synth, and big ass amp...Pierce yourself in un-speakable places and drive a Denali with "dubbs" ...look at me!!!!! a I'm a mix master, DJ Jam dumb ass.

Not that the new tools aren't cool and all that but, what happend to understanding why stuff sounds good and why it doesn't...what about the hours and hours of practice, music theory then paying your dues?

Just don't....don't get me started!

Paying your dues is something that shit musicians use to feel better because they will nevermake it.........

Stereo-typical rocker voice:

"man I was is the club scene for like, ten years and like, they think they can come up in here and...act like they know what its all about and.......I AM rock and roll and......"

Dude, you were in the club scene for like ten years because YOUR BAND SUCKS ASS and could not write a good song if your lives depended on it. PERIOD.

Yo yo yo...I am the DJ Jam Master cuz I got me a sampler an a arpagiator...check me...a whole tune with one finger. That's the thing I'm crakin' on. Now if I could only find an old record, I could scratch out some serious tunes. Gotta get me a disco ball and some strobe lights...I'll be all hooked up. Me and my band in a box are gonna rock the house.

Bottom line...I wanna be.

Need a drummer? Calling Dr. Neil Pert.... or should I call the BOSS tech support folks?

It's all good...I guess this thread regarding the death of Metal has me a little worked up. It's not dead, it's just over shadowed by instant music and marketing preying on the impressionable minds of our youth. Lets face it...good metal is hard to come by because it takes a lot of practice and many of the young listeners of today don't know or understand what they're listening to...in today's world, if it's not instant and easy not a lot of people are willing to put in the effort.

Ok...rip me apart...I deserve it. I should have just kept my mouth shut. Just not the face ok? But no matter what you say or do, Metal isn't dead...it's just taking a nap.

didnt read everything in this post, cause im reading more relevant stuff :D

Its not dead, just hibernating,,,I think when you say its dead it kinda refers to how metallica decided it was such a great thing to distance itself from their fans, and sue people for sharing music...yea cobain couldnt play guitar, and i hated nirvana, but i must give credit because quite simply music making doesnt require that you have to be able to play better and faster than your predessecor (no comments on spelling please :D)...There is definately still a huge following of metal which only grows exponentially, you just gotta seek it out more. I think metal prefers to be underground anyways. There is a radio station i listen too religiously here in calgary every saturday night, CJSW, university station. A little show called MEGAWATT MAYHEM, the guy doin the show has been around forever, (i believe at least 20 years)...it just goes to show that in a town famous for cowboys ropin cows, that even in the height of grunge metal survived, and always will...,

I "rented" a EMU MP7 from Guitar Center for a month, let me tell you, that is not by any means a one button arrped-fghsdughdfuwhatever type of box. There is MAD amound of programming involved. YOu can even get youself a groove and then add shit while you are grooving. NOT just techno, all types of shit. Outkast, Jurassic 5, its all there, because that is the type of stuff they use. That AKAI sampler in another example.

Here is how it works for a those not into it.....

you have like 13-16 pads with different sounds and you can press them in rhythem to one another and get a hella sick groove. Lay tracks on top of them, scip a beat, add LFO. If you do not know what a LFO is, then I am sorry, because I love them.

Then throw down some acoustic on top of all that and you have yourselves a masterpeice. Fuck the mainstream...DIY till I die!

Very late to post here. But I live metal. My first tape ever was a Girls Girls Girls by Motley Crue. I was born into it. The only reason that I play guitar is because I heard some Metallica and wanted to play it.

I agree with all that has been said here. Especially that SOME metal has NO soul. It is all shredding. The same thing goes for rock. Satriani, Malmsteen, Vai are all great guitarists that I would not want to listen to. There music conveys no emotion.

Emotion is what I love about all music, any type. If tons of emotion is conveyed in a song, I will surely respect the song and artist at least. Music for money to me is like wanting to be the president to tell your buddies that you got a blow job in the White House.

I would say that all music has seen a dramatic decrease in emdotion and feeling, and increase in studio effects and recording techniques; being the first to use some new effect.

Metal came from rock, and started out with a lot of harmony. Just after metal was born, the genre prospered. The musical talent was high and so was the creativity and inspiration. Metal still had many elements of rock, which I think made it good. It then went its own way to be heavier and less versatile, personal opinion. Started to shred , and again, the recording sounded good, but the material made you feel nothing. Newer metal (not MU-METAL!) is gone. The kids that played hardcore in high school took it over and our old traditional metal is now called metalcore. Artists such as Carcass, In Flames, and my favorite band: God Forbid, seek to restore the talent that was once demanded, and add the complexity, without getting too complex and showing as much emotion as possible. Sevendust is a perfect example of this.

P.S. If anyone only considers the old bands such as Ozzy and Scorpions and such as metal, they really shouldn't wonder why it is dead. All periods of music change, metal has changed. Ozzy is going to die soon ( probably on the season premiere of the Ozmonds or whatever that show is on MTV) . We will never return to the 80's ( and sadly never to the 70's, the 70's really ruled.)

I'll take a BJ in the White House.

silly me. i thought there was a new "metal is dead" argument to make a fool of myself in, and i've already spoken my piece. however, i'd like to add that anyone who still believes that metal is dead should check out lamb of god and darkest hour.
