I pay ~£42/month (what's that, $70) for phone line, evening/weekend national calls, international calls and 76Mbps broadband with unlimited, unthrottled downloads. You guys over there (in the US, I mean) seem to pay astronomical rates for internet.

Yep - BT Infinity2. It's very, very fast. They've stopped throttling traffic so they compete with Sky, so all my downloads are super quick. People hate on the homehub - it's ok, I've managed to do everything I want with it - nothing particularly advanced, but I can forward ports for my webserver, etc., easily enough and the default mail port isn't blocked, so I can run a mailserver.
I think Virgin Fibre is faster, but I think they're more expensive and less liberal (and not available in my area).

I did have an issue at my old address, the line kept dropping out, but they fixed it easy enough. Then I moved to an Infinity2 area and my speed doubled!

BT is slowly catching up with Virgin but I don't miss BT at all.
Virgin Media here. 120Mb BB (soon to be 150), Phone with evenings/weekends, 3Tivo boxes with everything but Sport. £60 a month. I'm on a V.I.P Mates Rates package though but it'll do for me.

It's a damn shame Sky Atlantic is actually good. It's the only thing keeping a lot of people tied in, I reckon.
I used to have to phone sky every few months and convince them that they had capped my speeds.
I'd have someone determined telling my my line is absolutely incapable of anything above 2048 or whatever, despite having piles of screenshots at 3500. They're dicks.
I was looking into it recently and apparently all the big players have failed to strike a deal with sky to lease Atlantic.
They've just put too high a price on it, on purpose of course.

I hate to spell it out to you Tobe, but the problems I have with the inability to get a line upgraded to support ADSL were created by the invention of the NBN and the negotiations about how it was to be rolled out - that was the Labor government of the previous 6 years that did all that. I'm also going to be amongst the last to actually get the NBN because the Labor government of the previous 6 years decided to roll it out in what I'm calling "reverse economic order" - ie. don't put it where there's a market where you'll get ROI but put it out to regional areas first.
So NONE of my personal internet issues have ANYTHING to do with the current LNP government and EVERYTHING to do with the previous Labor government and the decisions they made. They were always big on grand ideological statements and absolute crap on implementing anything. Did you have a nice rant?

The issues surrounding internet speeds and access are complex and not reducible to a rant about a particular government. Those of you who have been observant will know that I have been grumbling about my broadband speed and reliability ever since I got it.
The danger of attributing a single cause to a complex problem is that you may never get the problem solved, because you are not really tackling it.

For the record, my NBN issues are down specifically to the current government. My house was due to have fibre installed before the end of this year (I even have a yellow junction box cover with no hole underneath it installed on my lawn) but all that work is now on hold because Abbott and Turnbull think high speed internet is a fad for entertainment and piracy only.
The fact that they take lots of money from Murdoch (who wants the NBN like a hole in the head since he has his own plans) has nothing to do with it of course.
However, the other fact, whatever the cause, Australia is now years behind the rest of the developed world in terms of internet technology. Since we now compete in a global market, this is very bad news.

The NBN caused problems because tight sphinctered, long pocketted profit takers like, but not soley, Telstra, (50% Govt owned), won't spend money on anything anymore because of the NBN.
It's like the insulation disiaster - the then govt is getting monstered because businesses didn't train their staff, comply with the regulations and look after their staff. they were too busy making a motza from the opportunity.
Does any Royal Commission have a brief that allows it to investigate the businesses? NOOO!
Both policy were good, both implementations were a little rushed at first and businesses were the ones who took advantage and have caused the problems.
I go to HR when I get home to listen & unwind before doing all those other things.
