so I bought this nice mixer(analog) with 16 mic pre's
so I can really mic up a drum set.But my ultimate goal is to
record into the 24/96 world. Why would I want to return
that recorded 24/96 signal back to the analog mixer for effects, reverb, compression, or whatever. Wont my recordings start going to crap and defeat the purpuse of getting all that expensive 24/96 gear. Im confused. And what If I dont even do that and I add effects, compression, etc.
with some nice gear right out of the recorder. Wont the same thing happen. Running out of aspirin!! Mike

Mike,

My response to your question is that "it depends". If your processors, EQ, and cabling are "crappy" then your mixes are going to lose some of that 24/96 fidelity. But if your have good quality outboard gear, you may be able to do more with them than you could do in the digital world.

Low-end digital processors (i.e. "stock" software plugins) still can't compare to good analog equipment. 24/96 has about as much resolution and fidelity as analog tape (minus the hiss). So if your equipment and technique are good, you've got little problem of losing important sonic info.

Don't forget that a lot of major label material is still mixed in the analog world. Albeit with the best analog equipment available.
