Why doesn't this adapter work with the DMP3?

Because the RS one is DC output, and M-Audio's is AC output.
 
I ended up finding an AC adapter at Radio Shack, 9V, 800mA. Didn't think it would work, but it does, in case anyone comes across the same problem.

The end of the adapter didn't fit the DMP3, so the lady gave me one that would. I had to cut off the end of the adapter (the plug part), strip some of the casing and attach the new plug to it by twisting the wires together. Definitely a learning experience since I don't know shit about electronics, but it works and nothing blew up.

She said just make sure the side that has writing on it matches up with the plug which also has writing on one of the wires.

That's how you learn about this stuff.

Ideally you'd solder (and heat shrink) those connections but at the least I'd put some electrical tape over the connections.

I have a box of AC and DC adapters I've kept as old equipment quits or I get rid of it. (old phones, radios, routers, etc) I must have about 50 wall warts. Anytime I need an adapter, I usually can find one. You just need to check a few things on the input of whatever you are using:
1) is it AC or DC
2) voltage and current required
3) what plug fits. In AC, doesn't matter which lead goes where. In DC, you need to see which is "+" and "-". This is usually marked and it's usually the tip that's positive, but not always!

So keep all those old wall warts. You never know when you will need one!
