Why does a TRS cable minimize noise?

Thank you mshilarious!! That is exactly what I needed. One last question: If there is a signal difference between the two cabling, what affect will that have on gear that is different? Like running an unbalanced item into a balanced mixer? does it just mean I have to turn it up a little louder or what? Thanks once again.
