I'm going to get a turn table and start converting old records into cds and edit them and remaster them. I plan to just plug it into the input on my computer. why do i need a phono pre-amp?

thanks,

Zeke

Best I remember it's because the output level is too low. You have to boost it up to line level. There's lots of kits out there you can build cheap and I think even radio shack sells one or used to. Just as good - go to a yard sale and get an old stereo receiver with phone inputs for your turntable. If your turntable has a separate ground (like my Technics) make sure you attach it to the ground marked for this purpose on the back of the receiver. You'll probably get some hum if you don't (if your turntable doesn't have a 3 prong plug). Use the tape out to send it to your computer sound card. Shouldn't cost you more than about $10 at a yard sale.

if you want the best quality, it's best to get a preamp for it...

OLD record players will need a phono preamp for it (aka, a phono input in a reciever, which boosts the levels a lot louder). newer record players (some of them) already have that, so you can plug it into any aux input in your reciever, or say - your computer's line in? ha.

i know this, because i had the same probablems you had.

however - if you wanted - i dont see why you can't just buy a cheap preamp (like an audiobuddy or even cheaper! ha), and plug the record player into that (you will need 2 inputs, left and right!), and then go to your comp's soundcard.

just remember, your soundquality will be as good as the cheapest thing in your chain. so it just depends how intense and anal you want to get about this!

i mean, you COULD just plug the record player into your comp and be fine...right?

Yep.. The output from a record player without a built in pre is way to low for normal consumption. I have an old Realistic pre that works great for me. rca in's and out's. I think you could get one pretty cheap at radio smack..

If you want to hit ebay my pre model # is 42-2101a
