Why Do I Sound Like I'm in a Barrel With AutoTune in C5?

Am getting Cubase 5 set up and have installed some DirX effects I felt I needed, including AutoTune v.3.

When I run my recorded vocal track through AT as an effect, I sound like I'm in a barrel or going through a phaser or something. Very odd. Turning down the correction speed helps some, but nowhere near enough.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? There's nothing in the docs that I can find that addresses this.

Thanks.

I used AT as a way to make up for myself having an untrained singing voice. I forget which version I had but I experienced the same thing when notes were very uneven to begin with. I heard someone else say that it also happened when notes were "too even." I can't validate this statement, I don't even want to make an assumption. Just try lowering the correction settings; sometimes adding some VERY light vibrato might make the notes sound a little more in tune without having to rely on the correction AS MUCH...

Hope this helps...

Since posting this here, I got some advice from some pro studio users who said that this was due to (1) me not having it operating in the right key and/or (2) being too far off-key plus (3) not having the speed set right.

It works best and most transparently when it's doing the least.

Suggestions included having a piano reference track for the singer to monitor while laying down the vocal track.

The "Golden Ear" people say they can still hear AutoTune working even when it's running under optimum conditions, but it's not objectionable.

Certainly beats listening to my unprocessed caterwauling.
