So Idk where to put this. But like I see alot of rappers and hip hop artists and whatever recording themselves, some good some are just trash, and some are in the middle. Even the ones that are good, I can tell them " yo you should add some more eq" , or just give them advice in general on their mix. I can mix other artists, and hear what sounds good.

BUT

When I try to record my self rapping ( Im a rapper/ singer ) I can't hear me. I don't feel me either. I have problems deciding what sounds good and what doesn't. Does anyone know what I mean?
When Im at my friends place recording something I can hear myself, I know what sounds good and what doesn't. Same when Im at a studio. But when Im mixing myself, i just dont FEEL or HEAR myself.

Does that make sense?

Usually the best thing to do is just lay some tracks down and walk away from them for a few days. Gives you a whole new perspective when you come back :)

Get up close to the mic and use a tube pre.

...Holy crap this is funny! nice post ido1957.

Jovi, I know exactly what you mean. I don't think you need a producer. I think you ARE a producer.

I believe that good music is a delicate balance of tension and resolution. Personally, I have coached many vocalists in the studio and I also know what sounds good. When it comes to my own voice, I have excellent pitch and tons of experience and education on the subject of singing. I can make my voice do whatever I want it to. And, the bottom line is... I CAN'T SING! I simply am not a talented vocalist.

The reason is that great range and perfect pitch does not make your voice "musical". It is the contrast between your perfection and your imperfection is what draws in the listener. You sound like a guy whose raps are technically perfect. The problem is that no one likes technically perfect performances. That is the reason you can't "feel" it. And how could you critique it if its already perfect?

You can take this and apply it to yourself as an artist, but I don't know to do that. I just gave up, and as a result I have produced exclusively for the last 14 years (with the exception of a few background vocals).
