Why do people feel a compulsion to make these unboxing of (whatever mic) videos found on YouTube and Vimeo? Sometimes they don't even get around to actually demo'ing the mic.

Seems odd to me.

i completely agree; even the one's that do get round to demoing them often spend the majority of the video taking it out of the box, talking about how shiny and awesome it is, and then record 20 seconds of shoddy vocals. The last time i was on a new mic hunt i had a ganders round youtube for clips and there was a ridiculous amount of "unboxing" videos.

To me, posting unboxing mic videos is like someone posting "unwrapping your christmas presents for you" videos; part of the joy of getting new gear is getting it out of the box and videos like this take away all the surprise. granted, i can understand people wanting to know if it comes with a shock mount/wind shield/other extra's but 9 out of 10 times these details are in the manufactures specs on stores websites

Oh yeah. I see what you mean. The web is full of these. People showing off their new toys. Some are sent the microphones from the manufactures to do a review but alas - most are amateurs.

Yikes...I've managed to miss those before and wish it had stayed that way.

Maybe in the morning I should video the unboxing of my breakfast cereal.

if you do, make sure you don't actually eat any of it or comment on the taste, otherwise you run the risk of making an "unboxing" video that may actually be useful to someone :D

You could show the cleansing results of bran flakes on the digestive track.

They have no friends :( they put this up hoping to find some.

The "unboxing" I like to see is when someone takes the lid off their pre or opens their mic and does something cool with the insides

How do you guys not get this?

They are instructional videos for noob "producers" who refuse to learn anything for themselves, including how to open a box.

So basically they're being taught the proper way to open the box is one-handed while holding a camera with the other?

All these years I've had it wrong and used both hands....

Hey look, it gets them in. What more do they want?

Yer i dislike the box lovers too.
Nevermind the shiney box what does it sound like.

Its like preserving forever and showing off what came with the item so that in the future collectors can knock down the price because you didnt sell them the promo pamphlet that came with your new mic.

Talking of which. How are those diy ribbon mics coming on Paul?

This is just an other Schrödinger's microphone paradox!

Short answer: haven't built 'em.

Longer answer..

The ribbon and body kits arrived about 7 weeks ago, the transformers a little before that. I discovered that the transformers I ordered did not fit the casing on account of their shields

I ordered a pair of the same transformers (unshielded this time ). I then spent 5 1/2 weeks on a driving tour through our wonderful outback with my wife and 2 lads.

The new transformers (which fit) were delivered during my absence, so I just need to find some time to do the assembly. Not complex, but I need to get some time to myself which is challenging with my kids (bless them) currently on school vacation.

Stay tuned...

I thought we needed more box openings...

I have a box which is astonishingly similar to that one, except mine is labeled "Cabernet Merlot".

I suspect it has valves and transformers, since it is a bit warmer and rounder than the Traminer...
