Wow, there are many pedal mod suppliers out there! Of course, if you go to their web sites they only have good things to say, so I wanted to ask you. Are they easy to do yourself? Which one sounds the best to you, and why?
Thanks!

The stock one is a little thin and buzzy, which I guess cuts through OK in a loud band live situation. But if you want to record big fat tones, you have to mod your DS-1. Unless you just have a good tube amp that cranked sounds awesome.;) But I did a mix of mods to a couple of DS-1's I have, and settled on using LED's, boosting the low end, and goosing the gain just a little (LED's have a much higher forward voltage). All in all, it's much better, and by fluke (I am certainly not this clever) until the LED's kick in and start really clipping, there's actually an almost clean boost. It's too late for you now, but the SD-1 turns out even better; smoother and more natural sounding. Then the BD-2 works out amazing with the same mods. But it depends on you and your music. The DS-1 will turn out great for that hard rock tone.
I'm sure no one want to talk about it, but Eddie Van Halen used a DS-1, and Steve Vai used two in series. Ibanez took that idea and made the Gemini. So they can't be all bad. ;)

I did the Monte Allums one and liked what it did for that pedal a lot. I lost that pedal to my brother though (he borrowed and lost it) and have not done another, but I would do it again. I like his mods because they are very easy to fallow and he is nice enough to give you what you need to get it done and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than sending to to Keely to mod.
