I guess it's not a technical topic at all, but it says 'guitar playing' in the forum description so I thought I might give it a go.
For me, it's always been a lil bit random. I loved music ever since I was a kid and my dad sort-of tought me the basic chords and some Beatles songs when I was 6, so I always knew I wanted to be able to play and write my own music some day. Then when I was 16 I came across Van Halen (their Balance album to be exact) and it totally changed my world (and quite literally - I eventually moved the countries because of somebody I met on Van Halen forums). However, I only had an acoustic guitar back then and trying to learn EVH's licks had only discouraged me from going any further. I was in a mega crappy cover band at school and we split up after our first X-mas gig so I threw the 6-string in the corner and focused on studying IT (lmfao) .
3 years after then, there happened something different. I randomly came across a picture of a hairy biker-looking guitar player with a bullseye-stylized Les Paul and I just INSTANTLY knew I had to find out who the guy was and what kind of music he plays. And that was it - that was how I've listened to Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society and spent my 2 month's wages on a new axe. I've also finally decided to look into what new music has been written out there in the couple of years I've stayed away from it and I couldn't believe not only how much it was differenent from pretty much all the crap in the 90-ies, but how deeply I could relate to it myself.
I've also moved in to the UK just about after then, and after 2 years of messing around with tones it looks like I've finally found my own vibe that I'm really happy with. My main hero has always been Zakk - even when it comes to the strap position - I can't make the guitar hold any lower lol, and I've also been increadibly influenced by Mike Padge from Bullet For My Valentine, and Scott Gross/Brian Denavee of From Autumn To Ashes. For whichever reason I never drop-D (or drop-C) and always play in a standart tuning - I just don't really see the point coz my MT-2 combined with Equalizer gives me as low-end sound as I need.
So what about you guys?
