No.....no master volume (although my V-2 has one) but I'm gonna get a power soak for the VT-22. I might not need it for the VT40 'cause I play fairly loud.
As for the 7027A power tubes....they're made again so it's no problem. Plus I saw a tube site that said a 6L6'll go right in 'cause the only difference is a plate that runs to a pin that's not connected to anything in Ampegs.

nevermind.......

If you want a second one PM me!
:D

But these amps do need to be picked up. I can't imagine how we'd manage to box one up for shipping.

I got one too and I´d like to sell it.

anyone who like to buy?

I've had a VT-40 "head" (someone made a homemade enclosure for it) since around the year 2000. I've just recently got it back out & cleaned off the cobwebs. I had forgotten how great this amp was/is. I'm running it into a 4x12 peavey 5150 cab and it sounds pretty darn good! This is the only working tube amp I've ever owned and my knowledge about servicing it is very limited. I'd like to replace the output tubes and possibly some of the pre-amp tubes. I apologize in advance for my stupid questions :)

If the power tube has a big black circle on the side of the glass, I'm assuming it's bad, correct?

I tried to post pics, but I have to make 5 posts first.
Is it really difficult to add a bias adjustment to this amp?

a black spot by itself doesn't mean the tube has to be replaced.

As for biasing ....... it wouldn't be hard since you'd just be replacing resistors with a variable resistor basically. But I wouldn't worry about it myself ...... I've never rebias any of my 4 Ampegs since they can't be adjusted and I've never had any problems.

Scout around and find a tube tester in your town, they are pretty easy to dig up. Test the tubes before you replace them- I've rarely had to replace power-amp tubes, and I've been through a LOT of tube amps. Just keep in mind, the testers were made to sell tubes, so they are rather "conservative" in their tests- often a tube ID'd as "replace" will really be perfectly good, just not "great." Of course, let your ears help you decide, too.

I've still got my VT-40- actually, in studio/backline rental duty in New Orleans. Glad I didn't sell it.

still got mine ..... kinda don't wanna sell it but I can't pick it up so I may as well get money for it.

Or .... maybe build a cab for the head and another for a couple of the speakers.

Ahhh brings back the memorys......anyone remember the thread we had here quite a long time ago about the worlds loudest stock amp? I believe those of us who have had one or worked around them all voted for the VT-22.

Bob, since you still have the VT40 you should look at some of the revival information. I cant recall off-hand who's doing the mods but someone has perfected the master volume install in them. It goes in the back in one of the extention speaker jack holes and it makes this one of the best sounding low volume amps on the planet. Still weighs a ton though.....might have something to do with those transformers big enough to light up a house........

Maybe you already know about these, but the revival of this thread reminded me of it. I have a friend who has one of his three VT40's done like that and its sublime. But he looks at me like I'm crazy to want him to even move it and just brings the VHT Pittbull 45 along. Which is another thread entirely (certainly one of the best amps ever made).

I have a V-2 with the master volume ...... I use that still. I also have a VT-22 and a ReverbRocket

My VT-40 has had a master volume added to it as well. The thing really cooks.
I'm relieved to read that I won't need to adjust the bias to replace the tubes.
Thanks for your replies.

This is one of the 7027 tubes in question. It certainly doesn't sound bad!
Is the black spot a normal occurrence?
tube7027.webp

yeah ..... that's pretty normal. If it works ok don't worry about it.

And just so's ya' know ..... those 7027's are easy to find.
