Who will negotiate on price?

Hey,

I'm looking to purchase new monitors, and the model that I'm interested in is the exact same price everywhere. Will the mail-order places (such as Sweetwater) negotiate a bit to get my business?

Thanks,
JD

I bought some gear from ProAudioDesign.com and the consultant there took great care of me.

I originally emailed them and the guy responded to me and began answering questions and eventually worked the deals with me.

Most everything they sold to me was significantly cheaper than Musiciansfriend.com or Guitar Center.

Saved about $2000 as opposed to buying from Musiciansfriend.com or something.

I even took some of their quotes and went into Guitar Center and got a smoking price match.

But I am not sure how flexible they would be on just monitors but it never hurts to ask them if they have the product and can beat the price.

Call Full Compass. If they carry what you want, they often give better prices on the phone than what is listed on their web page. A lot of manufacturers have MAP -- Minimum Advertised Prices. When you agree to carry and sell their gear, you also agree that you will abide by the MAP for the gear. That's why the pricing in the ads is the same everywhere. If you don't abide by the MAP, the manufacturer will pull their gear and give it to someone else to carry. Doesn't necessarily prevent you from selling it for a better price -- you just can't advertise it.

So call and see what the various vendors will do for you.

Yah, thanks. I've had good success with Full Compass before, but am trying SW first because I have found that their customer service is better. I'm looking at Tannoys, and I suspect you're correct about the MAP, given that everyone advertises within $1 of one another.

Follow-up

Once again, Full Compass came through with a much better deal - 22% off the advertised price, even with shipping factored in.

I've haven't gotten to many deals from Sweetwater. Some of their prices have been good compared to others, but I tried dealing once and it didn't go the way I hoped it would. Still like the place, but buy from a variety of sources.
