Thank you for having mercy on me and reading my post. And thanks in advance for your assistance. I've been reading and enjoying the site for a few days now and finally signed up to participate.

Beyond a heavy enjoyment of many types of music and playing a few instruments as a kid, I have no experience creating music. I recently purchased a used Korg microKORG with the idea that I would learn some basics and eventually record some songs by recording individual loops of basslines, drum sounds and vocals done one at a time and put together piece by piece.

I've learned that I'll need an interface to connect to my laptop and a software package to record and edit the music. I plan on using Reaper, at least at first, based on a number of recommendations. Now I just need an interface and a mic (I guess). I'll continue to search the site for ideas for those pieces of equipment.

My question is this: assuming I have the synthesizer, interface, laptop and software, is it reasonable to think I can make a track in the manner I noted above? As a total beginner, I realize it wouldn't be anywhere near professional quality and am just looking at this as a creative outlet/hobby, but I at least want to arm myself with the proper tools to be able to muddle through the first few frustrating months of my new side project.

Any and all advice on this topic is MUCH appreciated. I know there are a lot of talented people reading these posts, so I hope to utulize any knowledge gained from following the responses.

You'll want to get an interface that can do both audio and MIDI, preferably over Firewire if your laptop has it, or USB 2.0 if it has that capability.

Maybe something like this:

M-Audio FastTrack Pro | Sweetwater.com

I haven't used the Fast Track Pro but M-Audio makes decent gear. You might want to check around for compatability issues with regard to the OS and specs of your laptop.

For drum sounds look into EZDrummer from Toontracks. Drag-and-drop MIDI drum loops and drum samples. Editing is kindofa PITA unless you also buy their EZ Player editing software. I use Sonar8.5 with Windows XP Pro and EZDrummer works great with it and doesn't use a ton of processor resources.

Also, keep in mind the more RAM you have the better using any soft synths/samples.

That should get you going OK, once you have the interface - on the assumption that you're going to record actual keyboard playing rather than simply using soft synths etc. via a MIDI editor..

Yep! You should be good to go.

And I wouldn't look at the first few months as frustrating...look at them as a learning experience. If you think something might sound good, try it out and see! The more you experiment the more you'll learn!

Guitaristic, thanks for the encouragement. I'm still toying around with the microKORG trying to learn its basics. At times, I feel like the thing is designed for people with music degrees, but slowly but surely I feel I'm making progress. Thanks again for your post.

hehe I think everything seems as though its designed for people with music degrees!! I've been recording/producing over the last 5 years or so and still have no idea what the hell I am actually doing lol. I've just decided to use my laptop with FL Studio now rather than my groaning old Desktop, but I've no idea if any of this suits my style of working yet or not! I reckon you'll need to just play around with as many bits and pieces as you can before you get comfortable with any. Not exactly very technical advice, but hope it makes some sense :P x

Well at least I know I'm not alone. That's some encouragement. Thanks, Carla Anne. Good luck with your progress!

Thx Supercreep. I look forward to enjoying the site for a long time to come.
