Who uses Apple computers?

Huh, is there something wrong with Brzilians post? Where?

AnyWHO! Come on, people! If you like Macs, then use them. If you like PCs then use them. ;)

People! People! Please let us not turn this thread into a warzone! Let's keep the focus-helping me. =)

Does anyone know or have reason to suspect that Apple will lower prices on their Dual G4's or up the speed of them at the upcoming MacWorld Expo (MWSF) in San Francisco? I do not know much about what is expected from these Mac expos.
No. Maybe they'll give you $100 or 150 off, but they have enveiled their latest machines too recently.

I suggest you go with the mac that is in your price range, and worry about the future when it gets here.

I use both, but I find myself going to the Mac more often.
Hard to describe, but it fits the way I better. And I've allways liked Mac only apps like Studio Vision Pro, and Digital Performer.

There are also jobs available if you know Pro Tools on mac.
In fact I've been trying to land a job at Microsoft that requires Mac Pro Tools knowledge.

Cakewalk Sonar is a powerfull app, but I've never seen any studios looking for a Sonar expert.

And the value of your post?

Just giving the facts that Pisces later admitted were wrong in his post...

gdouble,
actually Emagic's Logic Audio is going to "Mac only". I think it is freakin awesome that they are leaving the windows users in the dust who have faithfully bought their products. What a bold move. Well, I'm sure that decision was easier to make once Apple actually acquired Emagic.

charger,
I might have to go that route. I can't just sit around and wait for something to drop in price. Anything would be better than my 400Mhz G3. I guess I am afraid of minimal improvement when it comes down to it- I will be emptying all my savings into this so I don't want just a "new toy".

I am thinking that I might want to but a used one, like from ebay or from an online seized property police auction. Of course I would only do that if I could still buy the Apple protection plan. I sure don't want to open her up and find little bags of cocaine between my RAM chips.

Ma/T

There ya go being an asshole Ma/T. I have been 100% in your corner the whole time. I have been supporting your decission to go with a Mac instead of switching to a PC despite the obvious differences in platform and performance.

But then you went and said this bullshit...

"I think it is freakin awesome that they are leaving the windows users in the dust who have faithfully bought their products. What a bold move."

What kind of stupid ass shit is that to say? I was on a PC for years and made the switch to Mac around about the same time that Apple bought emagic. I wasn't cruched by the news that there would be no more PC for Logic because I was already switching. But if I were a kid that had saved and saved to get a professional grade piece of software and then spent over a year learning it... and even bought an update to version 5 and then 2 months later they said... "Sorry kid, you are basically fucked. Hope you don't mind having $900 worth of outdated software in a year!" I would be one disapointed dude. (a.k.a. pissed the fuck off!).

Bad manners man. Some people take recording VERY seriously and when emagic sold their company out like the $$$ whores that they are... it hurt a lot of people's feelings. It really hit some people harder than some can imagine.

May sound dramatic... but it was. And to have a Mac user rub their nose in it like that is just a dirty low blow.

Bad form man!

beloved sweetnubs would like to use his mac for a doorstop but this insidious inbred conspiring business keeps forcing us to use protools. macs cost twice as much and are half as fast.

Just the fax man

I'll admit hands down that an Intel Processor 3.0gHz is faster than the fastest 1.25gHz G4 processor.

But Macs do NOT cost twice as much... and they are NOT half as slow.

It depends on the application. It depends on the peripherals... who built the PC... Hell, it depends on the elevation and room temperature you measure the performance in.

But no matter what... a PC is NOT exactly TWICE as fast on average applications.

But they are faster than Macs, no question. Let's not get dramatic.

hey guys, I've been using mac since my first mac with 128k and Macpaint. I always liked them better than PCs, and as time passes they seem to be more and more similar to them. At the beginning (1980s) they were great since the learning curve was much easier, and so they were a good choice for creative jobs, been music, finance. Imagine what a good investment was to get a mac for a high paid manager, that could save you a couple of months of learning and salary payment.

I still have a G4 which runs smooth and looks great, and I don't think I'll need more power for some time. I know I could get faster and cheaper machines from the Wintel gang, but I really love this mac, mainly for it's looks and because it's easy to deal with (having the system extensions scheme is a great advantage for troubleshooting, instead of the registry scheme).

I really think that the computer industry is full of guys who hide information, much like mechanics and accountants do. And so they try to establish a grey are where you can't access by yourself and so you'll need them and their services. That's why (imo) Apple failed, because it tried to get rid of the intermediary. Of course, not sharing R&D costs also hurted them.

But the point is: why is this taken as some kind of religion war? Should you swear by a Hewlett Packard 12C calculator, and try to kill a guy who uses an IBM? It's just a tool, don't get caught on it. It won't change your life if you have one or the other.

My best case scenario is that Microsoft ends up absorving all the good things that Apple has done (in fact, one of the major MSFT's advances had to do with this) so we have the best of both worlds.

Of course I'll always like Apple logos better, and the machine is a beauty. But there is more beauty in a song being recorded in your home studio, and you can do that with any of them.

I'm in a good mood, it's almost summer here.
Cheers, Andrés

I agree with cordura21 on several levels. I agree with his look on the Mac vs. PC bullshit. I also agree with his taste in Avatars.

Whoooooooohhhhh!

I think it is freakin awesome that they are leaving the windows users in the dust who have faithfully bought their products. What a bold move.

I have to agree with pisces, that was a lame thing to say. emagic did not want to drop PC support, that was ENTIRELY Apple's decision, and if you ask me, as anti-competitrive as anything MS has ever done. Not to mention being just plain LAME. I can't say that I'm impressed with your attitude, Ma/T. I've encountered too many people with attitudes like yours over the years, who make this stupid Mac/PC war out to be of universal significance.

Nothing is stupider or more petty than believing you are a superior person because of the computer you use.

Woah woah woah. I think that what I said was taken out of context. When I said that it was great that that happened, I didnt necessarily mean that it was good. I meant great in an impactful way. That's why I said it was such a bold move. In general, it is an exciting and dangerous business move. I did not intend to snub my noses at all at PC, I mean how can I even try if I wanted to right now? Mac users are especially humble right now in the light of the newest PC speeds.
Something can be great in its impact without necessarily implying a positive or negative effect. Take the word "luck" for instance. Someone might say that something was lucky. Well, there is good luck and there is bad luck; so how does just "luck" mean good?
This other example is a little off-the-wall and may not be taken so lightheartedly, so here is your disclaimer. Like a shark eating someone who strayed into the ocean, the fact that the food chain was shook and challenged like that is a great thing. Of course that is not taking into account the personal loss and emotion of such a thing, but that is how I meant what I said, in more of a scientific manner. In that more rigid manner is how I meant to bring that up, I find bold things like that exciting no matter which side of the fence I am on. I am not the monster that you think I am! I was very suprised by the feedback I got because I am not an advocate of the computer wars. When I detailed the "leaving the PC users in the dust" I wasnt mocking those users, i only meant to illustrate just how daring a move it was for Emagic to do. I actually agree with what you said to how you took what I said, though I didn't mean it in the way you took it.

But no matter what... a PC is NOT exactly TWICE as fast on average applications. But they are faster than Macs, no question. Let's not get dramatic.
No - a comparible PC is not exactly twice as fast - closer to 3X I think. That's based on some comparisons I've done running audio plugins. (And the Mac is still twice as expensive and much less flexible)

I thought I was quite clear in my original post. Apple is an inferior tool from a raw performance perspecitve. The difference lies in the psychology of creating music.

???!!! This is some funny logic. If the PC is the superior tool, better to use the PC.

Unless Apple is about to pull some fancy hardware tricks from up their sleeve, they would do better to release the Mac OS for PC architecture.

It won't be long.

Amiga is another. It outclassed Both Apple and PCs. Amiga 500 had Rock solid performance. It had 4096 colors when the PC had a maximum of 8 and the Mac was black and white. Bad Marketing!

I think I read, somewhere, that there was some Mac app that works similarly to VirtualPC, but instead of the Mac "thinking it's a PC," it thinks it's an Amiga. Certainly music programs have gotten much better, these days, than what was once available for Amiga. Or, I could've been dreaming...

Really, I didn't get heavily into computers, till we got our first Mac (Performa 637CD), back in 1995, and I got my own Mac (beige G3, once rebuilt and heavily modified)...so, of course, my propellor beanie sports the old 6-colors. I keep talking about building a Wintel box...one of these days...when I can find the time to... ;)

Soooo...playing a bit of devil's advocate here...plus I am a bit out of touch on the computer end.

A 3.0 ghz machine beats a 1.25 ghz machine.
Why wouldn't it?
And is speed is the only issue?

What about reliability? Where do they stand...is Windows a better OS?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Your O-pinion that is.
