who says you need "real" instruments :)

i did this song with Drumkit From Hell Superior which i think is similar to ezdrummer. this was probably the least time i spent programming drums on any song though since i did this one super quick, so the pattern is ultra simple haha. plus all velocities were maxed out, so it's not the most realistic ever. i have a bunch of other songs i did with fake drums but i cant be assed to find em right now.

this was with 2 guitars recorded DI clean and run thru free amp sims too. :D

oh and i did this using DFHS too, just a quick loop, trying out some shit.

Cool Zed--thanks for the links. I'll check 'em out.

MIDI drums can be made to sound pretty realistic, but it takes, as solaris said, a LOT of work, and lot of time. I probably spend more time tweaking my drums than I do with everything else combined, and I'm close, but not perfect. Messhugga's 'Catch Thirty-Thr33' album was done pretty much entirely with DFHS.

I'm not familiar with Superior Drummer. Do you have any tunes that use 'em that I could give a listen to?

Old thread, I know, but in case you're still wondering about this software...

I just bought it about a week ago. I haven't recorded with it yet, but so far I'm pretty blow away by it for a bunch of reasons...
  • The software randomizes the strikes so you don't get the exact same sound twice in a row (no more machine gun drummer effect).
  • The software gives you the ability to track the drums individually. I just finished setting up a template the other night and I have eight separate audio tracks for the kick, snare, hats, hi-toms, med-tom, low-toms, overheads, and then one more track for room mics that are either close, medium, or distant.
  • The kits give you lots of choices for swapping out drums and mics.
  • Some of the add-on kits are really unique. For example, the Twisted Kit was recorded using Michael Blair's kit which can be heard on Tom Waits' Raindog cd and Elvis Costello's Spike cd, two of my favorites. It's an unusual kit to say the least. I was also really impressed by the Claustrophobic Kit which you can hear at the link. And they're about to release a Jass Kit which also sounds amazing.

Sounds cool, I like it. The only thing I would recommend is maybe going in and sorta randomly varying the velocity of some of the crashes so they don't sound quite so exact. Then perhaps "unquantize" the drum hits a little and scoot them around very minutely to humanize it sorta. Unless of course, you did that already... Anyways, I like the sound of the guitars.

There is an open source drum program on SourceForge called "Drumrack". It allows you to humanize the timing and volume of the drums, independently, with a linear slider bar.

Cheers,
Joseph

now all you need is the plug in for super cool mix enginer mode and you can sit back and go wow look what i did

I've used ez drummer a couple of times, sounds good. I then tried Superior Drummer 2.0 and must say it sounds extremely good. I've never had any comments on the drums from non-engineering people. They mostly listen to the melody anyways..Great deal if you don't have drums or are a lousy drummer like yours truly :)
