Optimus Prime
I remember Eddie Van Halen mentioning that he could play stuff with one hand Eddie couldn't play with both hands.

It's spelled Allan, and I'm going to see him play tomorrow night. He's an incredible jazz-rock guitarist. If you can, check out "Road Games" (which EVH was involved with) and "Metal Fatigue." Another excellent (and more recent) CD is "All Night Wrong" live in Japan.

Doesn't this belong in the bragging thread? :p

Awesome. He's also a Carvin man for those who are interested. I know there are a few Carvin guys out there. ;)

Check out a band called UK. He's on the first album. Theres only 3 so, I dont think you can miss.

The UK thing is not really the best place to hear Holdsworth first, it's kind of uncharacteristic, much less improvisational blowing which is one of his great strengths. The other two records he did with Bruford (Feels Good to Me and One of a Kind) are better overall, I think.

After all these years I still think one of the best examples of Holdsworth's playing is Believe It! by the Tony Williams Lifetime. I believe it's only available now as a package this album and the other album Holdsworth was on, called The Collection. The second one, Million Dollar Legs, is much less interesting.

After that I'd recommend the live dates Then! from 1992, and (as someone already mentioned) All Night Wrong from 2002.

Hey, I saw them back in college! Didn't know who Holdsworth was back then.

He'd be one of my favorite guitarists, up there with Al DiMeola. He did a bunch of prog rock stuff too, with Soft Machine, although he sort of changed Soft Machine into a fusion group. And Gong as well. I'm a prog guy, if you can't tell. =/

Go to the Carvin website and order their free DVD. Holdsworth has a long interview and plays some rather impossible guitar on it, and makes it look so damned easy

I saw UK live in the early 80's, was I disappointed to find out he had left the group shortly before the concert-ultra bummer

He's an awesome player on many levels. Some people find him boring nonetheless. You can't please everyone. He's worth a listen in my opinion.

Holdsworth is an absolutely jaw-dropping player.

Check out this video for those who don't know of him.

The guy has some nice chops but that type of music is really annoying. It sounds like they are just wanking in whatever key comes to mind at the moment. It must be nice to get paid to play gigs and never have to learn a single song. ;)

Yeah, but didn't you know that's what they call that "Jazz Fusion" :p
