Who has the worst TONE?

I've never liked Carlos Santana's tone.

Buddy Guy likes a really thin piercing sound that I don't like.

Jimmy Vaughan's always sounds bad to me especially next to Stevie's.

And what's the deal with Steve Morse? Sure he can play, but who wants to listen to it with that tone?

Here we go with the bad toners:

-knopfler (this guy truly sucks)
-the guy from scorpions
-slash
- I'm affraid the list ist endless... tho be honest I hate everything but sonic youth and dinosaur jr guitar wise...

ho yeah, clapton sucks too!

Knopfler has a great sound IMHO, Randy and Via just don't, I sometimes wonder if it's by design. The Scorpions sound is a bit annoying to me. All in all I have the worst tone, I vote for myself. I wonder if tone, sometimes, is affected by the presentation or execution. Sort of like food, Anyone ever have cow cod soup or ox tail stew? Tastes gooood. Looks like........

DUDE! If you like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., your tone comments on others have absolutely ZERO credibility!
I mean, NOISE MUSIC??? WTF's up with THAT?

I think the guy from Scorpions had a killer tone for that style. Don't hate someone's tone just because you don't like the music.
I for instance love Dokken (George Lynch) and Randy Rhoads, but they both share almost the same 80's middy overprocessed tone.

On the other hand, it's much harder to love a guy's tone, and hate his music.

Oh and the guy that says Gary Moore is a parody on blues, should gets his ass stuffed with Jack White's dick and a Dalles Arbiter Fuzzface!

speeddemon, sorry to say this, but your taste sucks!

Whats wrong with some good noise guitars?

dude, don't judge my complete taste because of 2 80's rock/metal guys I like.

Maybe you oughtta take a look in the 100 greatest guitarists according to HR thread.

Here are some more 'tones' I like:
Gilmour
Blackmore
BB. King
Clapton (during the Bluesbreakers days)
Angus Young
SRV (ofcourse... ;) )
Knopfler
Slash

And saying you hate Knopfler's tone, but love Sonic Youth is like saying "I hate Ferraris, but I love a good Pinto".

I think Insert name here 's sound is frickin awesome!!

Like on the Insert name here album

which came out in Insert year here

anyone who says Insert name here 's tone sucks

is a Insert expletive here moron........................

:D

A good guitar tone is purely based on our ears and how we like it. My room mate, who knows nothing about guitars, thinks the intro solo in "Revolution" by beatles, is the best! He says. everytime he listens to it, he gets energized.

As for me it's the most whimpy distortion I have ever heard.

@Joro, yes yes, very very funny.
Maybe you'd understand more if you (like me) have sat through a whole Husker Dü song, or Dinosaur Jr. song (I believe the song was Little Furry Things). That sound is to guitartone what Roseanne Barr is to beautiful women...

an outrage! an abomination!!! :p

thk god everyone has a different taste:D

Your list isn't that bad though, maybe it's because of your thong avatars I always think of you as an 80's hair metal kinda guy:)

LOL.... Kids say the darndest things, when they have their heads up their asses....

I don't care for clapton, but knofler is a genius. His tone is unique. I agree kids are not aware of quality tones.

jack white is awesome. so is j mascis, if you like punk.

sonic youth and my bloody valentine are the best guitar bands other than the velvet underground...

for shit tone basically all metal other than sabbath, slayer, tool, prong, and probably some others im not too aware of....

basically all modern electric blues is shit....
fusion jazz except for a few is shit
anything on pop radio is shit
all pop country is shit

eric johnson has the worst tone of all time...sounds like a beer commercial. the sad thing is he spends like 10 years trying to get those sounds, all for the intense enjoyment of balding middle aged farts

47ronin

I have to reserve judgement on Jack, cause I haven't heard much more than a years worth of tunes, if that ;).

I have some absolutely horrible tones coming out of my crappy equipment.

Other than that, I can't think of anyone  ... except to say I'm glad I'm not alone on the whole Randy Rhoads thing. Damn he was one of the greatest, but christ someone fix those recordings!!!

I share your opinion regarding knopfler.

At first I thought that this thread was goofy and now that I am adding to it I know it is...

It's all subjective however...

Knopfler is one of my favorites as is Duane Allman - partially because they often pick with their fingers which gives them a whole range of tonal qualitites that many electric guitarists don't even know exist.

I never liked Dicky Betts' tone especially when compared to Duane Allman. It is thin and weak (as is his playing.)

Jeff Beck is brilliant as is Steve Morse (how could anybody say his tone sucks when he uses so many different sounds? Just listen to "High Tension Wires" and you will hear amazing guitar sounds.)

Also, I like Steve Vai's tone, too - he is pure energy.

Just my 2cents.

What aboot the friggin' Tiny Tim solo on "tiptoe"?

I mean, Jesus friggin Krist!!! Talk about rich and thick tone!!!

He must have sold his soul to Satan for that little ukelele (sp?)

haaaa dudes I couldn't stop laughing when I saw how you people reacted to my attack on knopfler and clapton.

I'm talking about TONE, sound matter if you like, knopfler and clapton just don't give me that rich textured sonic matter psychedelic spectral explosion feel.

To me knopfler is the honest dude who gently practiced his scales in his room, plays allright, the grandmas like his songs, carrying deeeeeeeep messages,... but to me it's no musical genius. it's too standard, It won't stand the distance. I mean nobody will listen to "money for nothing" 50 years from now... it has no sonic impac.
I need an animal pulse, a sort of rage, a direct concretisation of what's happening in your brains, direct from feelings to the hand, no rehearsal, spontaneous sonic flow, even if it turns out to be white noise I NEED ENERGY AND LIFE!

Hendrix had that, Clapton didn't.
I need music I can't predict, that will surprise me... doh!
