Nightfire

Aspiring Idiot
Well, who has used it, is using it, owns it or has owned it?
At the moment this seems the cheapest and best choice for the kind of setup I am looking for.
-Has 8 preamps,
-has 8 line outs so I can mix on a board once I find a cheap Tascam M-series.
-has drivers for vista as well as leopard
-is firewire, not usb
-is college budget minded
Has anyone ran into any troubles with these units? The reviews seem great so far.

My friend Mike has one. It took a while for it to work with his Vista/Sonar combination. It seems to work okay now that the drivers have been made available.

We've downloaded 8 Channels of ADAT through firewire to SONAR all at once to his desktop (HP/Vista).

He has recorded tracks (one at a time) through the IO26 again via firewire to Sonar to his desktop.

When it works it's pretty slick. It has a certain amount of learning curve to it but once you have it set up it seems pretty stable. Took a while to stabilize though....

The thing does not want to work with his HP laptop though (on XP) but I'm not sure exactly why or what the probelm was/is... You may want to consider that...

Good to know.
I have HP/Vista combination, but looking to go back to XP. Regardless, its still an HP laptop:rolleyes:
Seems like a good deal, 8 preamps plus ADAT, meaning the possibility of 16 channels (or more...).
Do you have some samples of his recordings?

Mike

Don't have recordings right now but will try to get them from Mike. I had them but they were deleted when I turned in my old laptop for a new one at work. They were alright though, no issues with noise and preamps sound pretty clean.

Yeah the sound of the preamps is what Im interested in.
I heard they dont add warmth or colour, what you put in is what you get out.
Dont break your back trying to get the recordings, I found a review on another site that has been very helpfull and has helped me decide.
I might do a review here too in 2 months (2 months and I get back home, been living, travelling and sometimes working in europe for 8 months now).

I have had one for about months and it took a while to get it going certainly. Previously I was using Sonar 7 which has proved to be difficult when using a Dell laptop w/ RICOH firewire chipset, works better w/ XP than Vista int hat setup. I have found using Reaper (another recording program) it has been flawless which is really surprising. It is a great recording program you can try for free and then are encouraged to buy (the trial doesn't run out - www.reaper.fm). I have switched over and have been recording 6 inputs at once through a Dell laptop w/ RICOH chipset (which is bad).

I thought the HP laptops had the TI chipset for firewire? That or VIA should be good...

Anyhow all in all great unit when working - I highly recommend trying it with Reaper as it has been a lot easier than Sonar or Cubase LE to get reliable functionality.

Thanks for the feedback.
I still havent made up my mind, its either the Alesis or the Firepod.
I am using reaper at the moment, so its good to know its compatible.
I will probably run a Tascam M-30 as preamps, but I want good Preamps on the firewire convertor as well.

Alesis IO26

I've used my Alesis IO26 on one project so far, and it's worked just fine. I like the way it's setup like a mini mixer with the inputs on the top. I also like the two separate headphone outputs and volume controls. The meters for each channel are cool, too.

Great

I've used mine on three projects. I love it. I can throw one up if you want.
