Please do. I'm seriously very interested. Anything besides 3/4, 4/4, or 6/8 just confuses the hell out of me...... I played punk rock for like 5 years, and I was so confused when I tried to play different styles.... Thanks man :D

You can think of it this way: If you play a measure of 4/4 and then a measure of 3/4 and repeat it, you are playing 7/4. Now think 4/8 and 3/8 and you are in 7/8.

Everything can be in combos of 2's, 3's and 4's. A measure of 5/4 can be treated as a measure of 2/4 and 3/4. Add a measure of 4/4 and you have 9/4. Now cut them all in half (count by eighth notes instead of quarter notes) and its 9/8.

Two measures of 4/8 and a measure of 3/8 = 11/8. Two measures of 4/8 and a measure of 5/8 = 13/8.

Wow! I'm really off topic, now!

Actually there's a song by King Crimson that has sections in 17/8, and then goes into several measures of 5/4. I can ALMOST play it on guitar. It's confusing though.

Crimson influenced Tool anyway.

Sorry, one more thought on the odd time signature thing!

If you play a measure of 7/4 and drop one 8th note = 13/8

If you play a measure of 6/4 and drop one 8th note = 11/8

etc.

PhilGood, you've totally lost me. I really need to buy a book or something. I appericate you trying to help me, but I really can't understand what you're talking about. Seriously, is their a book or something I could read?

I only like strange time signatures when they feel natural. For that reason I love Carrey (Tool) and hate Portnoy (DreamTheater). Seriously, Portnoy is really overrated, he's just playing the same beat, he just cuts or expands the beat depending on the time signature. Carrey actually creates a beat that fits the time signature and progresses naturally. Also, yeah Lars sucks too.

I hate Keith Moon's drumming. It's musical gibberish to me.

i had to play a piece in swing band in 9/8 today, but its confusing because its not grouped in 1-2-3--1-2-3--1-2-3, with the emphasis being on the dotted crotchet beat, but was in 1-2--1-2--1-2--1-2-3.

then the saxes started playing in the normal 1-2-3--1-2-3--1-2-3, while the trombones were still playing in 1-2--1-2--1-2--1-2-3... that got Really confusing :p.

i've played pieces with the piano playing in 6/8 while the trombone plays in 4/4... that was Awful...

Carey's drumming goes really well with the bas on "Third Eye". Probably my favorite tool song in terms of rhythm. That or Ticks and Leeches. But I haven't listened to eithe rin a while... I havent listened to anything but system of a down for almost 3 weeks  .
