Pretty nice live recording. The sax isn't loud enough. Of course I'm a sax player but it's still not loud enough. The piano might be a little bit too loud during the rhythm parts....it's about right during the ride.

All in all it's a very nice live sound. I do some of these. I use a DAT-Walkman with a battery-powered Soundcraft board. I think yours' sounds at least as good....maybe a bit better. What kind of gear are you using?

I put a 57 on the snare, a Beta 52 on kick and used my pair of Behringer ECM-8000's as room mics. One over the drums, the other across the room. Sax is playing into my Marshall V67. I miced the bass amp (Sennheiser 421) and the keys are direct (Roland JV-1010).
All into my Mackie 1202's out the inserts to Sonar via Delta 1010.

Bob, check your PM's

You guys and your incredible knowledge of gear. Chuck, you lost me right after "I put a 57 on..."; but I think this tune is very cool. I wish I could play a REAL instrument. The performance impresses me a lot (but I am notoriously easy to impress).

As far as mix commentary, all I can say is..."I GOT BLISTA'S ON MY FINGA'S" is a great vocal additive.

Seriously, this is really nice. I'm jealous.
:D

wow...THIS is a live recording?!?!?!..very nice its all so balanced ..that sax is sweeeet........ok wait.......so is the pianoooooo.......that drummer has soft hands...something i do not posess in my drumming..(guess thats why i never made jazz band in school,,lol)..i can almost smell the smoke.......*fingers snappin*....excellent.....!!!

GREAT JOB ON THIS...do you have studio takes as well??? lets hear them......:D

Oh yeah! This is the kind of stuff I listen to everyday.Sounds as good as any live recordings I hear on Jazz radio.Damn I wish we had a jazz club in this little town....ok,Im dreaming now........The sax and piano players are tough man!

The sax is plenty loud on my speakers.Cool jazz jam that I will be listening to all week no doubt.

very cool... I listen to jazz radio too.. and this is very good.. nothing bad to say... maybe just bring up piano when it's lead... I say maybe because though I hear it in the recordings ... it actualy kind of silly ... because piano can't step up to the microphone... :D
very good... I'd say it's ready for radio play... :D
cheers

Wow. Two for two today! Nice recording overall. I kinda wished the sax was center and the bass had a bit different tone (more bottom) but it all sounds good overall. Great job!

See,white guys Can swing!:D

Sounds really good,I love the sax.

Nice clean recording,sounds pro.
Harvey would be proud of your gear list.

"It ain't the gear,it's the ear!"
(I know,my ears suck!):D

Very nice!

Best to you,
Pete

man, I love this stuff :D Sax is a bit dry, but it works. I'd like to hear this with an upright bass. Kick drum seems a tad loud. Piano, on the chromatic runs gives itself away as a keyboard ;)

Excellent stuff! Wish I was cool like you, and played this stuff, but I don't know any augmented 9ths... :(

Oh, people are talking all the way through this... can hear 'em. Cool. Live recording?

Chad

EDIT: Someone's got "blistas on his fingaaaas!"

Thanks everyone. Y'know, we mostly do rock, but the sax player's a great guy and he suggested we try some jazz.

Muzeman - I don't know if Harvey(Gerst, guru of the mic forum) would be proud, but he's certainly responsible for my recent mic purchases (Behringer and Marshall). Thanks Harvey!

chrisharris - The reason I put up the gear I was using is to reassure people of the quality of some of this stuff. I'm far from an expert on gear, but by deferring to people on this BBS I think I can make some good decisions.

mixmkr - bring your ear really close to the speaker and crank it. Hear the guitar? No? Doh! Only 4 of us on this session. I did do another session and we added a guitar. If there's anything salvageable, I'll post it.

The rest of you guys - That's me on bass, struggling to read chord symbols in "The Real Book" - a songbook of jazz standards. So forget about the upright :) The sax player and the keyboard player both have music degrees and lots of experience, the drummer's been playing for 25 years, so I'm just trying to hang on.
This thing just happened. And it goes to prove there's no substitute for good playing. The only effect is a comp. plugin for my bass playing. I set the faders and pans where I thought it sounded good on playback and left them. No automation.

let me start by saying, it sounds amazing.......i'm not overly farmiliar w/ jazz, but as far i'm concerned, it is really well balanced.....as far as the talking at the begining, i dig it, i've always loved that kind of stuff left in a recording......that being said, it being left in while the music is playing around 2:30 i don't dig, just my opinion though..........good stuff

Chuck - you knew I'd get around to this, didn't you? My first impression was that the trumpet soundy a little "synthy." Oops, sorry wrong song. :)

You guys did a real nice job. I liked the live recording aspect, it gave it a nice laid back feel, like I was there in the room with you. You done good with the bass, and I like the sax guy a lot. I even liked the drums on this one. Someone already said he has nice soft hands, and I agree. (This the same drummer from the Son of God song?)

Keep it up. I'd like to hear more of this stuff.

Mike

My hat is off to you! I can only listen in lo-fi, and man it sounded like hi-fi! It was that good on my machine! Probably one of the best quality wise I have heard on this board.

I had my toes tappin' the whole time!

Excellent Work!

Sm-o-o-o-o-t-h,that was the cat's pajama's daddio.
I thought it sounded great,I was snapping my fingers in a hep-cat fashion all through the song.
BTW if you've got blisters anywhere else but your fingers, I don't want to know about them.

Very Nice ChuckU. We've recorded everything of ours live up until recently and I wish I could have gotten that kind of sound. Mellow and soft, but clearly defined. Great job! :D

GOOD HELL!!!! What the hell was that? Where do I start.... How about here:

E X C E L L E N T

E X C E L L E N T recording, talent, performance, everything.

I played drums in the jazz band in HS and this brought back all sorts of memories... of how I WISHED I had sounded.

Just goes to show that all that matters is the music and playing it well.

Geez - really nice recording. I can't think of anything I could offer that I think would improve this.

I'll just say, "Very nice work," and leave it at that.
