What good effects should i apply on it?

what is Whisper Track? - it's a track you whisper

When should i use it? - when you feel it's appropriate

Where should it be placed in the mix? - depends on the mix

What good effects should i apply on it? - I like to pull the fader down all the way, and do a pre fader send to a big reverb

Whisper tracks can make cool effects layered on top of other vocals. It kind of adds an airyness and softness to voice.

I like to compress it pretty hard and have no reverb on it so it is kind of in -your-face intimate. Might need to de-ess a bit.

yup yup, +1

to be more specific, I've heard of a lot of engineers using whisper tracks under screaming vocals. I.e. If you have a "screamer" in your band (lol), you record him screaming the vocals first, then create a new track (whisper track) and have him whisper the lyrics with a lot of compression on it. This should give the vocalist a lot of air, and it's a cool effect.

Underneath...

I use them all the time, but I almost always put them way underneath the mix to fill it out. I also usually pan it hard right or left.
