Through the net the fellow I wrote the song with & I managed to get back in contact. We did our 1st recording of this in 1976 & we were enthused to start working again where possible. We've started with a rework of this song. eric has added 2 12 string tracks using the same Ibanez Hummingbird whe used in '76.
How do things sit?
Oh, the 1st instrument is a 'cello through a piezo pickup & heavily effected. Mic'd 'cellos appear later on.
Cheers

I've jsut been to the music page & clicked streamer play & it worked for me. I'll try again - sorry Ciro.

Works for me.

It's amazing to me that you have so much old stuff. I was 3 years old in 1976. :o

So how much of this is the actual original track? It sounds pretty good. I like the roominess of the whole mix. It's kind of haunting. The only thing that really stands out as needing work is some editing in the vocal track. You can hear it come in and out like it's been spliced or there's a noisegate opening and slamming shut.

Good, Rayc .I was 11 in 76 :)
Would be good to know what is 76 and what you recorded now.
Vocal is superb, 12 strings are working well.
Just the edits on voice ...
Interesting arrangement;I hear a Cello (low strings) starting at 1:05, bass at 1:33,and it helps with all the "atmosphere"...

I love the sound of this song. I went to rate it, and found that I had previously rated the song as a 4 (I guess it was before the remix, addition of your friend's new work), so I gave it a 5. I didn't hear the vocal track coming in and out. Did you already fix that?

I don't have anything that stood out as a possible "fix-it", I just really enjoyed it. It's the kind of music I could listen to all day.

I like it.

I'd suggest reducing the verb on the main vocal by about half.

Soundclick is acting up for me tonight. I just get a stuttering when I stream and the download is non-fucntional. I'll try tomorrow after work....

Very cool haunting stuff, Ray!
Like Greg said you have to fix that thing in the vocal track. The way it's edited sounds like a hiccup after every phrase. Nice roomy feel to it.

Joey :):):):)

Greg_L,
Thanks mate - I was about 19 when we 1st did this. I basically rebuilt it three years ago & then Eric, the co-writer found me via the net. He'd moved to Louisiana. He added the 12 strings last week.
the vocal - I was i a VERY any cabaret/emoting phase & sharply edited out any breathing etc between phrases - plus the lass singing tended to bump the mic stand etc. I'll see if I can undo some of that. It does sound like a pumping comp!
Back in 76 Eric taught me the 5 chords that kept me going until 1990 - I've expanded to 12 now!
Nothing original left on this - I used the original portable stereo cassette autolimitedbuiltinmics recording as a bed to build on. You should hear the original bass - a Coronet 3/4 EB copy through a 10 watt Coronet guitar amp - sounds like some one was thumping the side of a cardboard box.
CIRO,
Thanks mate. I'll work on the vox. I'm OLD aren't I? the intro effected 'cello is me, the basic uneffected 'cello is me also. The nice smooth 'cello lines are by the singer (she was my 'cello tutor). The slow build mix was Eric's idea.
lifelyrics,
Thank you! On the same page are a couple of songs in similar style & with the same vocalist - Silent Waltz & Sandpaper Castles 1811 - that you might like. I've not dealt with the vox yet. I'll let you know when I have.
XLR,
many thanks. Unfortuantely the vox were recorded wet! It was early in my learning curve & the lass was very self conscious & like so many other singers reached for the reverb. I'll see what I can do though.
ido1957,
Thanks for trying Gerry - the click is stuffing up a bit lately.
joeym,
Buddy Holly psych folk eh?

Love that droning intro, the cello adds so much depth...this has a real dreamy vibe that is unique....guitar sounds great as well...really nice mix...very cool...
In '76 I was 12 and taking my 1st guitar lessons from a teacher who was a total Paul McCartney and Wings freak...I remember learning the intro to Uncle Albert/Admril Halsey, and playing it over and over up to the trumpet solo part:p...seems like yesterday:D

Ok. I do really like the song first off. Though I did notice a couple of issues that simi-jumped out at me. First, the singer seems to veer off tempo quite a bit. Like, not a tight performence. A very good one, but no all that tight, like she couldn't hear any highly distinguishable tempo while she was singing. This isn't a big thing, and most likely I only noticed it beacuse I quantize the holy crap out of everything. Second, I can tell the vocals were recorded in sections. That's not a bad thing at all, and I do it all the time. The thing here is, it seems like the effects on the voice (reverb, etc.) were recorded in real time, and not applied after the fact. Because of that (I'm guessing) I can hear the reverb tail cut off hear and there a few seconds before going into the next vocal fragment. Overall this is a good song, and I don't mean to nitpick. It's very nice, and if that is you playing the cello, you aren't as terrible as you always make yourself out to be. In fact, you're very good!

-Adam.

Its a nice journey... 30+ years

G'day Ray and fellow HR enthusiasts.

Many thanx to Ray for the constant encouragement to revisit past ditties. Older and somewhat wiser I venture into the next 30 years with renewed enthusiasm but significantly "rusty" fingers.

I have lurked on here for a while and value also the words of wisdom re our venture from all the posters.

Ray is certainly now MY mentor and I bow to his experience. Lets see what we can tear up old fella! LOL

Great vibe Ray, the cello is a nice touch, as are the twelve strings. Reverb fan that I am I like the reverb on this too. I'm amazed that you managed to keep this recording intact for this many years. I have trouble finding pictures from that far back!

The vocal verb is really bright and sounds like its distorting a bit, and the sudden gating on the vox noted before sounds weird. Other than that, very unique and ethereal song. The cello up front i wicked! Very cool. Try the mix with a dry vox with some slight phasing or chorus. Maybe a modulation effect would be more suitable to reverb in getting that "washy" sound-scape the rest of the track has. Either way, cool effort and thanks for sharing.

Ok. This sounds cool! I really like the new mix a lot! Great job!
