queepy,
The drone is my piezo'd 'cello through an old Yahama FX500 setting I created called 'cellofocus - a modification of the preset softfocus. well, I was only 7 years older than you when we wrote this.
propman/adam,
Yeah, I think the slight tempo thing is due to the delayed thigo on the drone FX (it retards the thing a little) and a bit of a latency issue with the older & newer aspects of the recording. I thought about nudging but it works in a weird kindo of way.
ecka48,
Hello Eric - no longer a ghost on the forum either!!
ido1957,
Gerry - the '76 was just as a bed/guide track. I have cassettes I recorded in '74/5 mate - I haven't thrown away a single LP either. - I recycle, horde, reuse & refuse to let go of things that MIGHT be useful one day.
JRSIV,
I can't fiddle with the vocal FX as it was recorded wet to tape. Sorry - I like your ideas though.
ido1957,
Thanks mate - you're very generous - yep - Miriam (she married about 4 months ago - haven't seen her for a bit).
JRSIV,
Thank you very much.
propman,
Thanks adam - kind of you.

Yes Ray a ghost no longer. Its nice to see the old ditty get some nice words written about it, taa to all. I am happy to raise my hand for the "latency" issue of guits. VERY rusty here chaps. :) Nothing that some practice won't fix.
Eric

The vocal verb is really bright and sounds like its distorting a bit, and the sudden gating on the vox noted before sounds weird. Other than that, very unique and ethereal song. The cello up front i wicked! Very cool. Try the mix with a dry vox with some slight phasing or chorus. Maybe a modulation effect would be more suitable to reverb in getting that "washy" sound-scape the rest of the track has. Either way, cool effort and thanks for sharing.
Could you explain to me what you mean by modulation? I am interested.

-Adam.

Modulation effects are things like flangers, chorus and phasers. BeatPortal.com has a good primer on all things modulation. I just thought instead of 'verb on the vocal some phasing would complement the sound picture by adding some of that "swirly, washy" character some of the other elements have.

But the remix sounds really good as is. The verb works now because the gating is gone and vocal level sits better in the mix. Just my opinion...

JRSIV,
I'd have loved to apply some mod to the vox if the reveb wasn't glued on. THanks!

So all that reverb is permanent? That's my only nit. It's a little heavy.

Ok well, what was the effect they used on the background vocals of pink floyds "breathe"?

-Adam.

ADT through an Echo Chamber?

I'm not the biggest Floyd fan or expert but the vocals on "Breathe" sound to me like they were treated with ADT (artificial double tracking), a tool used in Abbey Road where the song was recorded in late 1972. There weren't boxes with tons of effects back then so reverb and tape manipulation (speed and frequency) were the major tools available.

On the subject of vocal effects, HarmonyCentral.com has a cool article on voice processing techniques that I thought was pretty informative. My experience with vox effects though is a little goes a long way...

Sorry. I meant the song Time. (I have been looking for a free/cheap ADT plugin though) The backing vocals (the oohs and ahhs) sound as though they have some kind of tremelo or flanging or something that I can't pinpoint. Listen to the backing vocals behind "staying home to wash the rain" at abnout 3:00 into the song. That's the effect I'm talking about.

Yeah Prop, those totally sound tremelo'd with some flanging on them. Back in the day the engineers would actually manipulate the tape by pressing the tape reel flange (hence "flanging"). "Dark Side.." is a wicked album! I always forget how cool it is until I listen again...

I've had problems posting this new mix of Whisper on Soundclick - upload speeds, (normally as poor as 17kb/sec from my neck of the woods) have plummeted to 0.74 kb/sec when it's not 0.0!!!! & I gave up after 2.5 hrs.
The link above is to download the MP3 from megaupload (took two goes & 5 minutes or more).
More 12 string, wider panning etc. though no change to the wet vocal as it's welded on.
Any ideas or comments?
& as soon as I've gone to other trouble soundclick & my ISP come good(ish):

I'd take a multiband to the vocal and acoustic guitar, R ... and set it to kick in at the few places when the upper mid-range gets a little spikey and pointed ... it only happens when git and vocal get "enthusiastic" and loud ... so the multiband can control that.

The swimming in reverb sound suits the feel of the song ...

Those are my only nits. The sound brings me back to when I was 19 in 1976.

Good stuff, Ray.

I can live with the reverb. Overall the vocal is a little quiet. I was my son's age when you recorded this.

I like this alot. I'm a big fan of reverb on vocals and I think it sounds killer. Definitely thick on the vibe mojo. I like her voice alot too.

I was 3 when you recorded this.
