:D

Low blow. But pretty damn funny.

Logically its the equivalent of saying "My car can't pull wheelies because I have a hamburger in the blender"

BTW I have 2 1176's one black, one grey and an 1178. I don't have a distressor, but I think it is an excellent piece of gear and far more versatile than the 1176. The point I was making is that to the MixMagServatory crowd, these pieces are like Avalon mic pres are to rappers

Now that is funny! :D

Where are those $10 an hour SSL rooms???!?!?!??

i bet there are some 19 year olds with basement studios in their parents' houses with cracked copies of waves ssl, or maybe even legit duende minis billing themselves as ssl rooms that you could get into for $10/hr.

Everywhere. If theyre getting 10 bucks an hour even its amazing.

In case you aren't aware of how this works:

1. Kid graduates from the conservatory (note that the majority of students are EXTREMELY well off)

2. After the "internship" hours required for graduation, it becomes painfully obvious to the parents that there are no actual studios to employ their child

3. Parent converts poolroom or cabin to become a studio "this will be great for little Johnny"

4. Parent faces the agonizing decision whether to buy an SSL AWS or a Digidesign Icon, or to "go vintage" and but a 4000 or 9000 series SSL or Neve VRP (much less common)

5. Parent has me wire up and equip the studio

6. After repeated and clear warnings from everyone involved that there is NO market for even well equipped rooms with amatuer engineers at those amazing rates they show in the Studio School ads, they decide to price themselves into the market somehow. The majority ends up doing a bunch of free projects for publicity's sake

7. Parent finally gives up and decides to send little Johnny to law and medical school.

8. Parent calls me to see who will buy the gear they need to get rid of

9. Rinse, lather, repeat

i'd be happy to have either...

if i was going to have just one, i'd take the distressor. if going for a pair, i might lean towards the 1176...

this really discredits your argument... totally irrelevant and

Maybe I should clarify then. That remark was not intended to actually be some sort of anti Reaper statement, but more of a jab at pipeline's last 2 years of posts that seem to be pretty much much anti everything BUT Reaper. I remember a year or two ago we had a member here who was so die hard on the Broadhurst Gardens preamps that it really became a turn off for those who may have actually benefited from it. Which is too bad in reality because in the end, the BG preamps are actually pretty nice. As for Reaper, I have no vested interest either way. I don't use it, don't see the need to, so just don't pay much attention to it. I am happy with what I use.

In the end however I am not the one making blanket statements that seem way out in left field. I didn't "strawman" you pipeline but made very logical assumptions from your own statements. You said...

"usually those two compressors re used for saying you have one"

and

"I am willing to bet the number of these that have never even had audio run thru them outnumbers those in actual use by ten to one if not more at this point."

and

"Most people dont buy them because they know anything or care anything about their sound or characteristics, they buy them because "its the thing to do"

As for the SSL rooms thing, I still don't beleive it, but of course there is always the possibility that it is true. However, it still seems fantastical and unrealistic and given the unfounded and stupendous claims that you made immediately prior to that you can't blame me for beleiving the way I do. You almost created your own foundation of mistruths right before it.

Evidence?

If you examine the material you'll see no real change in the last few years, its always been an anti-Conservatory/MixMag/phoney baloney marketing thing

If you don't think that most new people buy 1176's and distressors because "its the thing to do" go to a Guitar Center sometime

Pipeline seems to be a smart guy... It´s true that he supports Reaper and he hates diceII stuff, but that´s OK with me.

I found a lot of usefull posts by him... Thanks dude!

Where's all this gear? I just searched the Phoenix craigslist for audio gear. Found less than the Portland craigslist. Are you hiding stuff in your basement?

there are more than a few studios in this neck of the woods that simply wouldn't stay afloat if it wasn't for the parent or the wife's income.

most also advertise a certain rate and then hack it down to nothing.

of course most can't record to save their lives much less your record.

never heard a distressor but an 1176 will do it all.

Bitter party of one.....What a sad life...

I remember seeing these guys ads http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=26109&sid=60464d1bc04ceaee61a92d94d4c8ad0d in Ohio and thinking damn! Then I realized that was another place with a large vocational school churning out pretengineers, maybe at a lower rate than our two, but man 35/hour? And thats not one of these kids' poolrooms its a real studio. I heard they went down to 25/hr before they packed it in

that place has a neve and an SSL and they are still in operation. they charge about 25 bucks an hour. they're worth a whole lot less in my experience.

the person who posted that is not with that studio any more and is a really good egg.

Mike

Too bad. You are wrong. Sorry, I approach this from the mindset of a person who assembles and wires these rooms up. There are only a few guys in town who wire up ELCO's andTT patchbays. I'm one of them. Your ignorance of the local market doesnt affect my point.

Poor little UA kiddos. My girlfriend went to college in those parts and the stories are unreal. It is an artificial bubble of spoiled brats in a lot of that area. More SSLs, Gucci, illicit drug use and silicon than you can shake a stick at from what I hear based simply on more money than sense. (Gotta keep the kids quiet somehow when mom is away in Paris having her nails done and dad is in Hong Kong on business.) This is all hearsay on my part, but it sure lines up with what Pipe describes. Anyone in AZ, forgive me as this is not meant to stereo type but to corroborate that that culture is very alive and well in those parts.

That's funny! We've had an explosion of "studios" around here that advertise their $20,000+ worth of software, and less than 2k in hardware. You think maybe they downloaded it?!?!? One of the studios had the guts to sell cracked copies of the waves bundles for $200. Crazy.

If you were to have only one hardware Compressor, which one would it be? The Distressor, the 1176 or some other compressor? Why?

I need opinions so I can decide for myself on my next compressor purchase.

Thanks:D
I just got a distressor and man that adds the fatness and brings everthing up front. This was the best purchase this year!www.sterlingsoundstudios.com
