In computer based recording, which is the more effective method eq......software based or outboard?

I'm using Ntracks and no mixer. I'm wondering if the adjustability of a rack eq unit would be to my benefit. If so, is there a budget unit ($100-$150) that's worth having?

Also, anything I've ever used that had sliders, seemed to make more noise than knobs. Is this still the case?

Thanks all,
Rick

Depends on your conversion. A good outboard will do better than a software, but may actually do worse if you pass it through a crappy DA converter then back into a crappy AD converter.
As far as outboards, since the Speck is probably too much $$ try the symetrix parametric, might as well get the dual channel since its like $100 more.
Or, just wait for the RNEQ next year :)

I'd stick to the software Rick - as tubedude said getting in and out is probably going to effect the sound more than the EQ. There is some nice software EQ around like the Waves or if you want some free stuff try the Blue series.

cheers
John
