Which preamp is better?

I miss the way everyone used to respond to these types of questions. Give them shit! Let'em learn that way, especially if they're not interested in listening anyway.
 
Get a rane ms 1b or m-audio dmp3. I plan on getting the rane because i'm ready for another pre.
 
Well, he didn't ask what everyone thought of the taste of turds as a whole, just whether the brown ones or the yellow ones are better. We're simply not answering his question by distracting him with the fact that they are both, in fact, shit, but with a cute name.
 
if yr gonna go with one of these two go with the mic200.it has a real tube in it,the 800 has tube modeling which is pretty bad.
 
For budget preamps, how about looking at the RNP, DMP3, or the Rane. Or, for about $500 you can get into a 2 channel D&R preamp:)

If you don't have money to spend some thousands of dollars on highend, there's no reason to pay for what it is in between that and th cheapest gear around... by this, I mean that buy the cheapest or go get the most expensive... those in between will not be an upgrade from the el cheapo and will be a waste if you want to save for highend...

so... read some Sigmun Freud books and then make up your mind, or get wasted.:D

That's a clever answer... but will the RNP or dmp3 be an upgrade from a 24$ pre?... I don't think so... the ADA8000 is 27$/chan with ADDA and has been a solution for most ADAT users that cant afford an Apogee and an Universal Audio 8 chan pre... use a calculator first, unless you have the big bucks...:cool:

Oh come on guys!

We give folks shit for not using the search function, then when someone digs up an old thread (probably as a result of using said search function) we ask why?

I kind of like seeing old threads come back to life. I can inadvertently learn something I didn't ask a question about.







Did I just end two sentences a preposition with?

We give shit to folks who, for mysterious reasons, DON'T USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION and who instead ask questions that have been asked and answered ad nauseam, repeatedly, over and over, countless times, to exaustion, to a sickening degree, to redundancy.


We also give shit to folks who, because they are fond of a specific brand of gear, get onto forums like this and MISUSE THE SEARCH FUNCTION to resurrect lifeless, inanimate threads just so they can make comments about said gear.

Why ask us why we ask why?:D

In response to your response to these old responses, yes, they most certainly will be an upgrade to the super el cheapo stuff. First off, the DMP3 actually functions pretty well for its price. The RNP has a much smoother sound still, and the D&R is very clean and responsive. These are features that even the most expensive Behringer items don't offer. As for the ADA8000, well, that specific product really offers a lot of bang for the buck. I actually have one of those for expanding the I/O on one of my Yamaha 01V's for live shows. Personally, even on a live system you can hear the difference, although it is not as drastic as in the studio. It is considerably noisier than the yamaha preamps. Not only that, but I am now on my second one. I had mine die on me during a 10 day run of bands. Luckily it made it to day 9. It did not surprise me too much either. Oddly enough, that system was running from 9 or 10AM till 3 or 4AM every day for 10 days, and during that whole time there was only one item in the whole rig that failed. It was also the newest equipment in that rig by a few years. Like I said, it was no surprise to me, although I did think it might last more than 6 months. All that being said, I went out and bought another one. The only reason I did that is because a comparable unit would cost MUCH more, and I could not justify the cost of a better unit when compared to the return on the rentals, but we still may buy another better unit in the near future, or maybe just 1 or 2 more of the Behringers to keep on hand as spares, the only equipment I own that a spare may be necessary to keep immediately on hand.

IMHO, it's kind of human nature for us to fall in love with a product that seems to fit our needs, and "talk ourselves into buying it" but then want support that we are doing the right thing.

The problem is people don't realize that the responses back are from people that have already learned the hard way that if you spend a 1/4 of the price you're going to regret you bought and end up spending more money getting the better product in a few months.

I must say that asking about preferred gear at a certain forum will get you more brownie points. Good suggestion as well.

That may be true, but a lot of super cheap stuff works pretty well, too. The difference is mostly margins, not quality of the parts that make it up. These days, most pres just use a TI op amp with minimal support parts (totaling maybe two or three bucks per channel) and the company pockets the rest.... There's usually not a whole lot of difference.

And before you say "yes, but the DMP3 is different," I would point out that every piece of M-Audio gear I've used has lots of electrolytic caps and sounds spitty. You could almost certainly build the DMP for less than a fourth the cost and use quality components and get a much better sound.

I tend to strongly agree that if you don't spend a lot per channel, you're not going to see much improvement. There's no real advantage to using quality parts from the manufacturer's perspective. It adds cost and nobody seems to notice anyway. The exception are the boutique pres, but those cost a lot more. If you really want a quality pre, you basically have to build it yourself, or at least design it yourself and contract it to a manufacturer in China (e.g. the preamp group buy).
