For another opinion...I used to have a BR1600cd and loved it. I was able to get great sounding mixes out of it and it was simple to use. Unfortunately, it was lost in a house fire a while back and I decided to 'upgrade' to the Yamaha AW2400 (big brother to AW1600 so many here seem to like).

Anyway, I've had it over a year and have used it for about 10 minutes. Way too complicated and made me start hating music and recording. Trying to sell it but no takers.

So, I would go back to the Boss Br1600cd in a heartbeat if I could. Sound quality on Yamaha may be a bit better, but usability is a big barrier in the Yamahas.

get like a used korg d1600 MKII... The Rolands are nice but don't they record compressed or something? The Yamahas, well, I like a bigger screen. Or maybe just a different color one. For ease of use and not having to refer to the manula, my vote goes for the korg d1600 MKII. The thing that bugged me a lot about the 3200 was that the 'joystick' is also the 'click button' and when you hold the pointer over what you want to click on, the damn pointer moves!

I think my last post is in this thread is stuck in a wormhole -- I made it three weeks ago but it shows on the menu page as 17 hours old.

Oh well ... update ... the heck with the Zoom HD16. I just ordered the Korg.

:D For ALL those folks looking for assistance using the AW1600, there is a great PDF file called RECORDING 101. Here is the help:

Be back in a second to find the file.

The Korg D3200 is the best.
I own it. Know it, love it.
They all have a huge learning curve so I wouldn't let that be my guide.
Tascam Neo would be next in line.
The Roland VS2400 is okay but noisy. Most of all, it's old technology.
The Yamaha unit was good, like all Yamaha gear but I'll say it again.
The Korg D3200 is the best.
If you can afford it.

I have been very pleased with the Boss 1600cd. very easy to use and good sounding. I definitely recommend converting the tracks to wave files and mixing in a computer if you can, though, as mixing and editing is much easier that way.

Korg D1600

You can pick up a decent D1600 for pretty cheap these days. 8 tracks at a time if you don't mind "only" 16 bit. It's a good machine. Lots of built in effects and the touch screen will have you blazing through every operation.

Quick update on the Korg D3200 (in fact all of the Korgs except the D888).
It also serves as a control surface for your computer DAW.
In addition, brand new on the market is a device which will allow you to connect a Korg D3200 to a VGA screen.
The gizmo is still in its infancy, so some teething problems but in production and a huge advance for the Korg D3200.
