 I will soon be recording shaker and tamborine overdubs and would like some advice on mic selection, room size and placement...
My mics are:
2 Rode NT1's
4 SM 57's
1 Sennheiser 602 (I think that's the model # for my bass drum)

I'm inclined to go with a Rode. I'm just not sure where to place it relative to the shaker and tamborine while recording....
Thanks for all help in advance,
Jeff

Put the Rode up high, near the ceiling, pointed straight down at the floor. Record the shaker and the tamborine about 2 feet away from the mic, directly underneath the mic. Roll off some bottom end if need be. Don't go over about -10 dB on your meter.

Resist the temptation to move the instruments closer to the mic.

Harvey, is the idea to keep the shaker parrallel to the mic plane to avoid phase issues?

Naw, nothing that fancy. It's to make sure you're getting maximum top end from the mic, and that you're not so close that slight movements make big sound variations.
