Breaking into Fort Knox or taking the top plastic panel off of a TASCAM 244 Portastudio?

I opened the bottom panel no problem. Undo a few screws and it pops right off! :)

The top panel seems to be an entirely different matter!

I pulled all the fader knobs, no problem. Undid every visible screw from the underbelly and it still doesn't want to budge?

Is there a trick to doing this? If so, please help.

I just want to get into the unit from the top so I can clean up the transport buttons, take a peek at my faulty headphone amp that only outputs sound on the right side and also get to the rubber edged cam drive wheels that pull the tape in play and record mode.

Cheers! :)

Tascam 244 Portastudio ,1985...
First to remove top cover leave all single knobs in
place and lower halves of double knobs or the black
felt skirts will fall off on inverting m/c.
Remove other slider and switch knobs.
From underneath remove 4 screws and 2 plates holding meters in place.
4 corner screws, 2 screws either side of mains transformer,
1 screw under 3/4 meter and 1 under ch2 meter, central long screw ,
tape-head access cover plate and one screw next to master slider.

I have no idea if this is on target

just readin this gives me neck-ache

good luck

Thanks Doc! :)

Actually, I took another stab at it and finally got it off without breaking anything! :D

I've managed to clean the rubber edged cam drive wheels and got the transport working much more reliably now but I am still having troubles trying to clean the play button micro switch! Put some deoxit in there and didn't seem to make much of a difference. :o

I'm having fun though!

More details to follow soon.

Pictures too!

Cheers! :)

Well, I got it all back together, cleaned the cam roller, and fixed the play button! :)

The transport still doesn't want to consistently play when you press the button as the take up reel still gets a bit lazy at times.

But, I got all the screws back in, plugged it in and it's at least better then it was.

There is trick to cleaning those little micro switches for the transport buttons and it doesn't involve using deoxit! I noted that the button surface would freely turn when I was trying to clean it and discovered that if I took a pencil with an eraser on the end of it and used the eraser tip to turn the top of the micro-switch, that would actually clean the contacts and made the switch work reliably with a light touch afterward instead of really pressing hard on it to engage.

A couple of pictures below of the cam roller and the transport micro switches.

Cheers! :)
