Which would be better to use for plugging a mixer into and recording? Any drawbacks for Firewire of PCI? Thanks.

I bet they are both pretty much well equal.
FireWire opens the possibility of being mobile/portable as well as encloses the converters in their own housing, as opposed to being in the computer case and susceptible to electronic noise from other computer components (rare but possible).

Get the 1814
Get the 1814 ....I use the 1814 because I didt like the 2496
I plug my mics directly into my pre amps then use a patch cable to go to the 1814 and it makes it alot easier and you also have the control box
