Which Input to Use on Soundcard?

This is probably going to sound like another dumb question from a newbie. It seems pretty obvious to me, but I need someone to ease my mind.

My Creative Labs soundcard has two inputs: one with a mic symbol next to it, and another with a symbol that I think stands for direct-in (?). When plugging a mic straight in for recording, I should use the one with the mic symbol, right? If so, what is that other input for?

For best results, use the Line input with an external mic preamp (e.g. on the low end - m-Audio Audio Buddy, ART Tube MP, etc).

the other input is for a line level signal
